Career

Volandri turned pro in 1997. In 2004 he won his first ATP tournament in St. Pölten . On May 16, 2005, he was ranked 28th in the world , his best ranking so far in July 2007 with rank 25th. In 2005 he moved into the third round of the French Open ; In 2007 he was there in the round of 16, it was his best performance so far in a Grand Slam tournament . In 2006 he won his second ATP title at the Palermo tournament .

At the ATP Masters in Rome in 2007, Volandri caused a sensation when he surprisingly defeated world number one Roger Federer 6: 2 and 6: 4 in the round of 16 ; before that, he had already beaten Richard Gasquet . With a victory over Tomáš Berdych he moved into the semi-finals, in which he lost to Fernando González with 1: 6 and 2: 6. At the French Open in the same year he reached the last sixteen, which he lost to Tommy Robredo .

On January 15, 2009, a doping ban of three months was issued against him, which was completely lifted by the CAS two weeks before it expired. At the Indian Wells Masters tournament in 2008, he tested positive for salbutamol . Volandri had an exemption for this substance because of his asthma , but he was accused of exceeding the agreed limit values. The sanctions imposed by the lock were reversed by the CAS ruling.

In the 2013 season, Volandri was particularly successful on the ATP Challenger Tour . He won two singles titles and stood in three other finals, which he qualified for the Tour Finals . He won the tournament with a final victory over Alejandro González . In June 2015 he won his 300th match on the Challenger Tour in Milan , a mark that only three other players had reached before.

He played his last professional tournament in Rome in September 2016. Volandri never officially announced his resignation. He is the director of the Italian Tennis Federation.
