Pere Riba Madrid (born April 7, 1988 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish tennis player .

career

Until 2006: Junior career and first experiences as a professional

Pere Riba started playing tennis at the age of six. His first major success was winning the Junior Davis Cup with Spain in October 2004. This year, at the age of 16, he was able to qualify for future tournaments in the men's area and win games there. In May 2005 he reached his first future final.

2007–2009: ATP debut and successes on the Challenger Tour

It should be until June 2007 before he could win a future tournament for the first time. He also reached five more Future Finals between April and August 2007, making it into the top 400 of the tennis world rankings . In July 2007 Riba was able to qualify for an ATP World Tour tournament for the first time in Umag , and win his first ATP match against Luka Belić before losing to former world number one Carlos Moyá from Spain. He spent the rest of the year in Challenger tournaments, but never made it past the quarterfinals.

That changed the following year when he reached the final in Medugorje in July 2008 and won his first Challenger title two months later in Seville. In addition, Riba took part in the qualification for a Grand Slam tournament at the French Open for the first time this year , but was eliminated in the first round. Due to his success on the Challenger Tour and two future titles at the beginning of the year, Riba rose to 155th place in the world rankings in 2008.

Also in 2009 Riba failed to qualify for one of the Grand Slam tournaments, but he was able to qualify at the ATP tournaments in Hamburg and Bucharest and reach the second round. He defeated Evgeni Koroljow in Hamburg for the first time a player from the top 100 of the world rankings. Further successes this year were the title defense at the Challenger tournament in Seville and Challenger finals in Tangier , Brașov and Florianópolis .

2010–2011: Grand Slam debut and establishment in the Top 100

Since he had now climbed to 121st place in the world rankings, Riba was directly qualified at the ATP tournament in Santiago de Chile , and reached the second round there. After his third Challenger title in Barletta , Pere Riba was listed in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time in April 2010. After Rafael Nadal, he was the second youngest Spaniard to do this. Due to his world ranking position, Riba was directly qualified for the main field at the French Open , and defeated the French Marc Gicquel in his first Grand Slam match . In the second round, however, he was ultimately defeated by his compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero after two contested first sets in four sets. In doubles, he even reached the quarter-finals alongside Marc López . In June 2010 Riba won his fourth Challenger title in Bytom , but then retired at Wimbledon in the first round. A month later he was able to qualify for the main field of the German Open in Hamburg, as in the previous year , and after two three-set wins over Paul-Henri Mathieu and Albert Montañés , he entered the third round of an ATP tournament for the first time. Even though he lost there in three sets against Potito Starace , this success brought him to 73rd place, his best world ranking position to date. In the further course of the season he could not win another ATP match; at the US Open he was eliminated in the first round in five sets against qualifier Adrian Mannarino . In September 2010 he lost at the Challenger tournaments in Seville and Banja Luka each in the final, before he was able to win his third title of the season against Carlos Berlocq at the end of the season in Cancun in November 2010 .

In January 2011 Pere Riba was able to reach the second round of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time after defeats in the first round in Doha and Auckland in his Australian Open debut by defeating Carsten Ball . There he had no chance against Jürgen Melzer, who was in 11th place . After several first round defeats Riba reached the quarter-finals at the ATP tournament in Casablanca in April 2011 , where he had to admit defeat to eventual tournament winner Pablo Andújar . At the Masters tournaments in Monte Carlo and Madrid , Pere Riba made it into the second round as a qualifier, defeating the top 50 players Potito Starace and Kei Nishikori . At the French Open , as in the previous year, he was able to reach the second round by beating Ivan Dodig , where he was clearly inferior to Janko Tipsarević, who was 29th . At Wimbledon , Riba lost to Robin Haase in the first round . In August 2011, Pere Riba reached the final after a second round defeat at the ATP tournament in Kitzbühel at the Challenger tournament in San Sebastián , but lost to Albert Ramos there .
