Men's singles of the US Open 2010 .

Defending champion was Juan Martín del Potro , who was unable to defend his title this year due to injury. The final was played by Rafael Nadal and Novak Đoković , which Nadal won in four sets. This was his first triumph at the US Open and his ninth Grand Slam title overall, making him the seventh player in history to reach the career Grand Slam .

While Nadal reached the final without losing a set, Đoković had to go the full distance of five sets in both the first and the semifinals. In his semi-final match against last year's finalist Roger Federer , the Serb fended off two match points in the fifth set with a score of 4: 5 and then took the Swiss's service game to 6: 5. Nadal only had to give up his service game five times in the course of the tournament, equaling the record set by Andy Roddick in 2003 . As in 2008 and 2009, the men's final had to be postponed by one day due to rain and was interrupted for almost two hours due to a thunderstorm when the score was 4: 4 in the second set. The number of break chances played by Nadal (26), and that Đoković was able to ward off 20 of them, was astonishing.

Surprises at the tournament included the early elimination of number seven seeded Wimbledon finalist Tomáš Berdych (1st round) and Andy Murray , Nikolai Dawydenko and Andy Roddick (2nd round each). On the other hand, the Russian Mikhail Juschny , who was seeded at number twelve, had a positive surprise , who only failed in the semifinals against the eventual tournament winner Rafael Nadal.

Roger Federer hit the tournament in his first round match against the Argentine Brian Dabul , when he made a pass through his legs and back to the net with a score of 6: 1 5: 3 after a Lop Dabuls.

Strange things also happened in the second round game between Novak Đoković and Philipp Petzschner . The game had to be interrupted for a short time when a young man and a woman first had a verbal argument and then the woman's father physically attacked the young man, until the security finally settled everything again.
