Alejandro Falla (born November 14, 1983 in Cali ) is a former Colombian tennis player .

Career

In the first years of his tennis career, Falla played various future tournaments and was also used for the Colombian Davis Cup team . On January 13, 2003, the left-hander won his first junior tournament in San Salvador . In the same year two more senior future victories followed at tournaments in his home country. On March 8, 2004 Falla won his first tournament as part of the Challenger Tour in Bogotá . Three weeks later he was victorious again at the tournament in Salinas when he defeated Gilles Müller from Luxembourg . In April 2006, his third and, until 2009, last Challenger title followed, again in Bogotá.

As part of the ATP Tour, Falla played for the first time at the French Open , where he won in the first round against the Dane Kristian Pless , but lost in four sets to David Nalbandian from Argentina in the round of 64 . At the Masters tournament in Miami in 2007 Alejandro Falla made it into the last 32 players after he had beaten Donald Young , Chris Guccione , Sergio Roitman and Tommy Haas , but was eliminated by Radek Štěpánek . In Lyon 2007, the Colombian reached a semi-final at an ATP tournament for the first time. Here he was defeated by the French Marc Gicquel in three sets and thus made it into the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time . In 2009 Falla won the tournaments in Pereira , Cali and Rennes on the Challenger Tour . With Alejandro González he also secured the title in doubles in Bogotá . In 2008 he had already won the doubles tournaments in Cali , Bogotá and Medellín at Challenger level with Juan Sebastián Cabal .

On June 21, 2010, Falla almost created a surprise at Wimbledon . In the first round Falla led against the six-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer with 2-0 sets and even served to win the match in the fourth set, but ultimately lost 7: 5, 6: 4, 4: 6, 6: 7 (1 : 7) and 0: 6. The following year he was with Xavier Malisse in San José for the first time in a final on the World Tour. The two were defeated by Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram with 8:10 in the match tie-break. In September 2011 he won again the individual competition of the Challenger tournament in Cali . In the 2012 season he won titles in Barranquilla and for the third time in Bogotá . On July 16, 2012, with rank 48, he also achieved his best career value in the individual ranking of the world rankings. At the Olympic Games in London in July , Falla was eliminated in singles after losing to Roger Federer in the first round. In 2013 he finally reached his first individual finals on the World Tour. In Bogotá he won four unseeded games and met in the game for the tournament victory on Ivo Karlović , to whom he had to admit defeat in two sets. At the start of the 2014 season , he immediately secured his Challenger titles ten and eleven in singles in Nouméa and Bucaramanga . Falla reached his second individual final on the World Tour in Halle in the middle of the year . However, he was defeated twice in the tie-break against Roger Federer. Alejandro Falla's last title wins came in the 2016 season on the Challenger Tour. With Eduardo Struvay he won the tournaments in Barranquilla and Medellín .

Falla announced his resignation in 2018. In the Davis Cup he played a total of 27 matches in the course of his career from 2001 to 2017, in which he won 22 of his 32 singles and 9 of his 16 doubles games.
