Álvarez played tournaments of the lower class ITF Future Tour and ATP Challenger Tour during his active time . On the Future Tour he was able to show his first successes and regularly made it to the semi-finals and finals. At the end of 2000 he was 383rd in singles and 324th in doubles. Through this ranking position he regularly took part in tournaments of the Challenger Tour in doubles. In the following years he held this ranking position without making a breakthrough on the Challenger Tour.
By the end of 2008 he had won 15 double and one single titles on the Future Tour. 2009 was his most successful for Álvarez. After his first round defeat in qualifying for the Australian Open , he took part in the Challenger in Bucaramanga . In the singles he lost his opening game against his doubles partner Carlos Poch-Gradin . With him he played his way up to the final, which they won against Carlos Avellán / Eric Gomes . He took part in the other three Grand Slam tournaments that year, but won no game. He won his second title in August against Juan-Martín Aranguren . In Geneva they defeated the duo Henri Laaksonen / Philipp Oswald . Subsequently, he was awarded the 216th rank in singles as never before, in doubles his career high was 143rd rank from November of that year. In the following years he was unable to repeat the successes on the Challenger Tour, he only won four more Future titles in doubles and one in singles. After a first round defeat at a future in Argentina, he ended his active professional career in 2011.
