Ivo Karlović is 2.11 meters tall, next to the equally tall Reilly Opelka and ahead of the 2.08 m tall John Isner, the tallest tennis player to ever make it into the top 100 in the world rankings . His strongest weapon is the serve , with which he also set several records: in 2009 against Lleyton Hewitt in the first round of the French Open , he hit 55 aces, but lost the match. In the semifinals of the Davis Cup 2009 against Radek Štěpánek he served 78 aces (7: 6 5 , 6: 7 5 , 6: 7 6 , 7: 6 2 , 14:16); the match lasted almost six hours. From March 5, 2011, Karlović held the record for the fastest serve: In the Davis Cup -Double game against Germany (on the side of Ivan Dodig ) he beat a service winner with 251.4 km / h and replaced Andy Roddick (249.4 km / h) as the record holder. In the spring of 2013, Karlović was diagnosed with viral meningitis , which showed severe symptoms and prevented him from playing in tournaments or even training for several weeks. After this illness-related break, Karlović celebrated a successful comeback on the tour: at the tournament in Bogotá he was able to win another title at ATP level after more than five years; in the final he beat Alejandro Falla . Karlović did not have to give up a set in the course of the tournament and did not lose any of his service games.

Ivo Karlović has been playing for the Croatian Davis Cup team since 2000 . With this he won the Davis Cup in 2005 , but was only used in the semifinals against Russia .

Since October 8, 2015, he has been the world record holder for most aces beaten. In the game against Pablo Cuevas , he scored 26 aces, overtaking the previous record holder Goran Ivanišević , who hit 10,243 aces over the course of his career. Currently (as of April 4, 2019) he has hit 13,309 aces in 725 matches.
