Samuel "Sam" Groth (born October 19, 1987 in Narrandera , New South Wales ) is a retired Australian tennis player . With 263 km / h he holds the record for the hardest serve in tennis.
Career
In 2005 Groth reached the junior double finals at Wimbledon on the side of Briton Andrew Kennaugh . Since his first professional season in 2006 he has been mainly on the ATP Challenger Tour . In singles he won his first title in Rimouski in 2014 , while in doubles he has already won 15 titles. He made his Grand Slam debut in 2009 thanks to a wildcard at the Australian Open . There he was eliminated, however, despite a 1-0 lead in the end with 1: 3 sets in the opening round against Mardy Fish . With Chris Guccione , he won his first title on the ATP World Tour by winning the doubles competition in Bogotá in July 2014 . In the following months he reached the finals in Washington with Leander Paes and the finals in Shenzhen and Moscow with Guccione . He achieved his highest single placement in the world rankings in October 2014 with 87th place in singles and 31st place in doubles.
In May 2012 he hit at the Challenger tournament in Busan, South Korea, in the game against the Belarusian Uladsimir Ihnazik, the fastest serve ever recorded with 263 km / h. He exceeded the world record set by Ivo Karlović in March 2011 by 12 km / h.
After the Australian Open 2018 he ended his career and announced that he would play Australian football from now on.
In September 2014 he made his debut for the Australian Davis Cup team .
From 2009 to 2011 he was married to tennis player Jarmila Gajdošová .
