Philipp Marx (born February 3, 1982 in Biedenkopf ) is a former German tennis player .

life and career

As a junior, Philipp Marx has already competed around the world and stayed in the top 100 of the junior world rankings for a year. He defeated, among others, the then 17-year-old Andy Roddick .

Marx's adult career began in 1999 by participating in Future tournaments. In 2002 he was able to celebrate his first individual title in a tournament of this category in Montego Bay . It was not until 2006 that he was able to win a future tournament in Oberentfelden for the second time. Thereupon he reached rank 300 in the tennis world rankings, his best individual placement. He could not win a single title on the ATP Challenger Tour and did not reach a main field of an ATP tournament .

His double career was more successful: after he had won two future tournaments in 2005 and reached two further finals, he won a Challenger tournament for the first time in Shrewsbury in November 2006 and also reached two other finals in tournaments in this category. He also won two more future titles and ended the year in the top 300 in the world rankings.

In 2007 another Challenger victory followed in Düsseldorf and four more titles in future tournaments. The year 2008 was even more successful: a total of four Challenger titles in Fürth , Lugano , Scheveningen and Alphen aan den Rijn as well as several finals led to a record of 107th place in the double tennis world rankings.

At the beginning of 2009, he finally made it into the top 100. In June 2009, the greatest success up to that point followed: alongside the Australian Rameez Junaid , with whom he had already competed successfully in many tournaments, Philipp Marx qualified for the the main draw of Wimbledon . After a smooth first round win over Guillermo García-López and Iván Navarro , they failed in the second round in five contested sets to Prakash Amritraj and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi . Since October 2009, Marx played most of the tournaments alongside the Slovak Igor Zelenay , with whom he now fully concentrated on doubles. The first common goal was to reach the top 50 in the double world rankings, the long-term dream was to participate in the ATP World Tour Finals .

After two Challenger titles at the end of 2009, Marx and Zelenay were both in the top 80 at the end of the year and thus directly qualified for the Australian Open 2010 . There they lost after two wins in the round of 16 against the eventual finalists Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić . A month later, Marx and Zelenay advanced to the final at the Delray Beach ATP tournament , where they were defeated by the Bryan brothers Bob and Mike . At the French Open , the two failed in the first round to Yves Allegro and Andreas Beck . At Wimbledon , Marx and Zelenay lost, as in the previous year, in the second round against Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, who this time played alongside Rohan Bopanna . Again it was a very close match that was only decided in the fifth set with 13:11. At this tournament, Marx also played for the first time in mixed on the side of Andrea Petković , but the two lost in a close match in the first round. In the following months, Marx and Zelenay were able to reach ATP semifinals in Stuttgart and Bucharest . In addition, Marx was in two Challenger finals with his old partner Rameez Junaid . At the US Open , as in Wimbledon, the second round was the final destination for Marx and Zelenay.

At the Australian Open 2011 , Philipp Marx competed with Santiago González , with whom he had already contested a few tournaments the previous year. However, they failed in the second round to the second placed Max Mirny and Daniel Nestor . At Wimbledon , Mrax achieved his best result in a Grand Slam tournament with the quarter-finals. At the end of the year he was 64th in the double world rankings - also a career record at the end of the season.

In 2012 he fell back a little in the world rankings and rarely reached the second round in World Tour tournaments. Only in Melbourne and Wimbledon did he reach the second round of Grand Slams in doubles. 2013 was a similar year. In Moscow and Zagreb he was able to move into the semifinals. At the end of the year he was in the top 90. In 2014 in Zagreb he reached his second final at an ATP World event. With Michal Mertiňák he lost there in the match tie breaker . After finishing the year in 98th place, he did not play a tournament until mid-2016, before ending his career after the tournament in Kitzbühel .
