Daniel Köllerer (born August 17, 1983 in Wels ) is a former Austrian tennis player and reality TV participant.

Youth and first steps

In his junior career he achieved the highest placements in the ITF world rankings of under 18-year-olds, 23rd in singles and 24th in doubles in 2001 and won one tournament in singles (1999) and two in doubles (2000).

Career

At the age of 19, Köllerer became a professional and twice Austrian champion in singles in 2005 and 2007. Initially, he mainly played tournaments of the ATP Challenger Series in order to qualify for the ATP Tour . His first major international success was reaching the quarter-finals of the Grand Prix St. Pölten in 2004. In the double competition in Kitzbühel, he reached the semifinals. He also won the doubles competitions at the Challenger tournaments in Tarragona, Karlsruhe, Genoa and Cali. In 2008 he won two Challenger tournaments. At the Acapulco tournament in 2009 he reached the round of 16 as a qualifier after a 1: 6, 6: 3 & 6: 4 victory over the number one seeded Argentine David Nalbandian , where he defended Alberto Martín in just under three hours after defending two match points with 6: 4, 5: 7 & 7: 6 (4). Ultimately, however, Köllerer had to admit defeat to Nalbandian's compatriot, Martín Vassallo Argüello , in the round of the last eight with 6: 3, 7: 6 (6). He scored his first win of the season at the Challenger of Rome. After this success, he achieved his best position to date with position 85 in the world rankings. In his first appearance at Wimbledon , he lost 7: 6 (3), 6: 2, 5: 7, 4: 6 & 4: 6 in the first round to Simone Bolelli despite a 2-0 lead. At the Swedish clay court tournament in Båstad , he reached the second round, where he had to admit defeat to Spaniard Fernando Verdasco after a match point was awarded 7: 6 (1), 2: 6 & 5: 7. In August he was removed from the Davis Cup team after constantly provoking his teammates Jürgen Melzer and Julian Knowle during the game at the Umag tennis tournament .

At the US Open 2009 he survived the first round in a Grand Slam tournament and failed in the third round against the eventual winner Juan Martín del Potro in four sets.

In March 2010 Köllerer made his Davis Cup debut against Slovakia , but lost both individual games. Also in March, he got into the second round of both the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Masters . At the French Open , Köllerer burst into tears after the 1: 6, 2: 6, 1: 6 defeat against Teimuras Gabashvili and his management spoke of a burnout syndrome . Only one week later, on June 3, 2010, Köllerer was strangled by his opponent Stefan Koubek after a battle of words during the change of sides in the Bundesliga match between TC Gleisdorf and UTC Strasbourg . Koubek was then disqualified by the referee. Two weeks later at the Challenger Tournament in Reggio nell'Emilia , Köllerer lost in the semifinals to Federico Delbonis , but he caused another uproar because he allegedly insulted his opponent Júlio Silva racially in the first round . At the end of July 2010 Daniel Köllerer was disqualified at the Challenger tournament of Cordenons in his first round match against Robin Haase . The reason was that Köllerer had contact with his coach Markus Egger during the toilet break when changing sentences, which is forbidden in professional tennis. According to Köllerer, Egger had said nothing more than "Come on, keep it up". In September 2010, Köllerer broke off his first-round match at the Stettin Challenger Tournament against Pablo Cuevas in the third set after his opponent allegedly injured his knee with a tennis racket. The video recording did not provide sufficient information about this. At the beginning of November 2010, Köllerer had an operation on his wrist. He made his comeback in March 2011 at the future tournament in Antalya, which he won without losing a set. In April and May 2011, two more future titles followed in Italy and the Czech Republic.

Bundesliga

Köllerer competed in 2004 and 2005 for the TC Rot-Weiß Erfurt in the 2nd Bundesliga tennis . After the rise of TC Piding , he played there in the 2006 season in the 1st Bundesliga . In 2009 he was the top player at TV von 1926 Osterath ( Meerbusch ) in the second division, before he played in the 1st Bundesliga in 2010 at Rochusclub Düsseldorf .

Style of play

Köllerer was known to the last point on the tour as a dogged fighter. He was considered a specialist in clay courts. At the end of 2006, he entered the Guinness Book of Records with the longest three-set match held in a single competition in Asunción, Paraguay , as the winner of the 4:34 hour game against the Argentine Martín Vassallo Argüello .

Controversy and Lifetime Ineligibility

Because of his temperament, Köllerer was nicknamed "Crazy Dani". On October 1, 2004, he was banned from the ATP for the first time. In February 2006, he was banned for the second time, this time for six months.

On May 31, 2011 the PTIO (Professional Tennis Integrity Office) announced that Daniel Köllerer had been banned for life in three cases after almost two years of investigations due to match-fixing. He was also sentenced to a fine of $ 100,000. On March 23, 2012, during the appeal hearing, the ban was confirmed by the International Sports Court , only the fine was waived.
