Federico Delbonis (born October 5, 1990 in Azul ) is an Argentine tennis player .

Career

singles

In 2007 Delbonis began his professional career, which was marked by failures for a long time. Two years later, however, he achieved his breakthrough: In February 2009, he celebrated his first tournament victory at an ITF future tournament in Guatemala , which was followed by other good results in the ATP Challenger Tour . In August he won the Challenger tournament in Manerbio , Italy after a 6-1, 6-3 in the final against Leonardo Tavares . With this success, he moved into the top 300 of the world rankings for the first time .

In April 2010 he moved into the final of the ATP Challenger in Naples , but lost it 4: 6, 4: 6 against the Portuguese Rui Machado . In that month he also achieved his second Challenger success in Rome ; in the final he defeated Florian Mayer 6: 4, 6: 3. With another finals in Rimini, the Argentine moved up to 117th, which is his best world ranking so far. In the same year he took part for the first time in the qualifications of the US Open , Australian Open and French Open , but was eliminated each time in the first round.

The year 2011 began for Delbonis with a Challenger semi-finals in São Paulo , but otherwise went for a long time without any real success. In the first qualifying round for the ATP World Tour Masters tournament in Madrid , he surprisingly won against the then number 47 in the world, Fabio Fognini - his first win against a top 50 player - but was eliminated in the following round. His dry spell ended in July 2011 when he reached the semi-finals as a qualifier at the ATP 250 tournament in Stuttgart . On the way there Delbonis defeated Florian Mayer , Serhij Stachowskyj and Pavol Červenák one after the other before losing to Juan Carlos Ferrero 6: 3, 4: 6, 4: 6.

At the tournament in Hamburg in July 2013 he was able to move into the final as No. 114 in the world rankings via qualification. He reached the semi-finals through victories over the top 35 Spaniards Tommy Robredo , Fernando Verdasco and Nicolás Almagro . There he defeated Roger Federer with 7: 6 7 and 7: 6 4 . In the final he was defeated by Fabio Fognini , who won the tournament in Stuttgart a week ago , 6: 4, 6: 7, 8 , 2: 6.

In 2016 he won the Davis Cup with the Argentine Davis Cup team . In the final against Croatia he was used in both singles. After an opening defeat against Marin Čilić , he contributed the decisive point to the 3-2 win with his win against Ivo Karlović .

In 2013 Delbonis played in the 1st Bundesliga for Bremerhaven TV 1905 .
