Tommy Robredo Garcés (born May 1, 1982 in Hostalric , Girona ) is a Spanish tennis player .
Career
When he was just one year old, his parents gave Robredo his first tennis racket. He always played on Sundays with his father, a tennis coach. Four years later the family moved to Olot . There the father became the head of a sports club and Robredo began to train regularly. In 1996 he moved to the Center d'Alt Rendiment performance center in Sant Cugat del Vallès near Barcelona.
He has been a professional since 1998 and has so far won twelve individual tournaments on the ATP World Tour , namely twice the tournament in Sopot (2001 and 2007), in Barcelona (2004), the Masters tournament in Hamburg (2006), Båstad (2006 and 2008 ), Metz 2007, Costa do Sauípe and Buenos Aires 2009, Santiago de Chile 2011 and Casablanca and Umag 2013. He was also eleven times in the finals of a tournament. The victory in Metz in 2007 was particularly impressive as Robredo grew up on hard courts, but so far his successes have mainly been on clay courts. His comeback in the 2013 season was even more impressive, when he battled his way back from world number 471 to the top 20 after a thigh injury including an operation in 2012 and won two tournaments.
In the doubles competition, he was able to record five wins in ten finals: alongside Rafael Nadal , he won both the tournament in Chennai (2004) and the Masters tournament in Monte Carlo (2008) and, together with Marcel Granollers, the tournament in Costa do Sauípe 2009 and 2011 Auckland . In 2013 he won the Brisbane tournament alongside Marcelo Melo .
Robredo has been playing for the Spanish Davis Cup team since 2002 . In 2004 he won the Davis Cup with the team , for which the team was also voted Team of the Year. He was also able to win the Hopman Cup for Spain twice , in 2002 together with Arantxa Sánchez Vicario and in 2010 at the side of María José Martínez Sánchez .
The greatest success of his career was his participation in the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai in 2006 , for which he qualified sixth in the world rankings. In the group stage, he only won one of three matches, so he could not qualify for the semi-finals.
Others
He got his first name because his father was a fan of The Who and their rock opera Tommy .
