Michael Craig Russell (born May 1, 1978 in Detroit , Michigan ) is a retired American tennis player .

Career

Russell started playing tennis at the age of five. He was coached by his father George from the beginning of his career until 2012. Russell turned pro in 1998. In the same year, the American was at the US Open for the first time in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. In the first round he lost to his compatriot Todd Martin .

In 2001 Russell reached the round of 16 of the French Open with victories over Nicolas Mahut , Sergi Bruguera and Xavier Malisse . There he led against the defending champion and eventual winner Gustavo Kuerten 6: 3, 6: 4 and 5: 3, before he was awarded a match point in five sets with 6: 3, 6: 4, 6: 7 (7 : 9), 3: 6 and 1: 6 were defeated. That was his best result in a Grand Slam tournament and also the only time that he got past the second round. Russell was the first player to qualify for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament four times in a row (Wimbledon 2000, US Open 2000, Australian Open 2001, French Open 2001). During his career, he won 15 singles titles on the Challenger Tour and two more in doubles. He reached his only final on the ATP World Tour in 2012 in Atlanta doubles .

After the US Open 2015 , he ended his career.
