Nicolas Mahut (born January 21, 1982 in Angers ) is a French tennis player . His greatest successes are winning the doubles competitions at the US Open 2015 , Wimbledon 2016 , the French Open 2018 and the Australian Open 2019, as well as leading the doubles world rankings .
Career
Mahut is a serve and volley player and doubles expert . In 1999 he won the Orange Bowl , the unofficial youth championship, and in 2000 he turned pro. With his doubles partner Julien Benneteau he won the junior doubles in 1999 at the US Open and so far two ATP tournaments.
In 2007 Mahut reached the final of the Queen's Club Championships after victories over Ivan Ljubičić and Rafael Nadal , which he lost to Andy Roddick in three sets 6: 4, 6: 7 (7: 9), 6: 7 (2: 7). A month later he was also in the finals in Newport . In the 2013 season he won his first title on the ATP World Tour in 's-Hertogenbosch at the age of 31 when he defeated Stan Wawrinka 6: 3, 6: 4. Nicolas Mahut played his fourth final on grass in July 2013 in Newport. He defeated Lleyton Hewitt 5: 7, 7: 5 and 6: 3 and won his second career title within a month. He won his third individual title in 2015, again on grass and again in 's-Hertogenbosch. In the following year he won the title in 's-Hertogenbosch for the third time .
In 2013 he was with Michaël Llodra in the double final of the French Open , which they lost to the Bryan twins 4: 6, 6: 4, 6: 7 (4: 7). Another Grand Slam final followed in 2015; at the side of his compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert , his new double regular partner, he was defeated in the final of the Australian Open to the Italians Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini . In the third participation in the final it was more successful; with Herbert he won the US Open on September 12, 2015 and thus his first Grand Slam title. At the beginning of the 2016 season he first secured the title in Rotterdam with Vasek Pospisil before winning the Masters in Indian Wells , Miami and Monte Carlo one after the other with Pierre-Hugues Herbert . On June 6, 2016, he became the first Frenchman to take the lead in the world rankings since Yannick Noah in 1987 . The following week he was replaced by Jamie Murray at the top. Shortly thereafter, Mahut and Herbert defended their title in Queen's Club and secured their second joint Grand Slam victory at Wimbledon after a final victory over Julien Benneteau and Édouard Roger-Vasselin . Mahut then took the lead again in the world rankings. In 2017 he won three Masters tournaments with Herbert. In the 2018 season he won the French Open with him and reached the final of the ATP Finals , which they narrowly lost. With Édouard Roger-Vasselin he also achieved two tournament victories. At the beginning of the 2019 season he won his fourth Grand Slam title with Pierre-Hugues Herbert at the Australian Open . Together with Herbert, he completed the so-called career grand slam , winning all four grand slam tournaments.
Mahut made his debut for the French Davis Cup team in 2015 . In 2017 he won the Davis Cup with France.
Record match
On June 24, 2010, Mahut and the American John Isner set a historic record in the first round match at Wimbledon . After a total of eleven hours and five minutes, Mahut lost the match against Isner 4: 6, 6: 3, 7: 6, 6: 7, 68:70. The decisive fifth set was remarkable, which only brought the decision in favor of the American after 138 games. The match began on June 22, 2010 and was adjourned after the fourth set that evening. As there was no decision on the following day, the match was finally interrupted again at 59:59 due to poor lighting. The last sentence alone lasted eight hours and eleven minutes. The game set new records not only in terms of length, but also in terms of the number of aces: Isner got 112, Mahut 103 aces. Never before had a player reached a three-digit number of aces in a match. Due to the long match duration, many more records were set.
In 2011 they met again at Wimbledon. This time, Isner won the game in the first round in just three sets (7: 6 (7: 4), 6: 2, 7: 6 (8: 6)).
