Horia Tecău (born January 19, 1985 in Constanța ) is a Romanian tennis player .
life and career
Junior career, Davis Cup debut and first successes in future tournaments
Horia Tecău was already extremely successful as a junior. In singles he reached the semi-finals in 2003 at Wimbledon , in doubles he won the title there alongside his compatriot Florin Mergea in 2002 and 2003. In addition, they reached the final of the Australian Open in the same time and stood together at the top of the junior doubles world rankings for a long time.
In 2003 the duo won three future titles in the professional field and thus achieved a placement in the top 500 of the double world rankings . They also played for the Romanian Davis Cup team and were able to contribute a five-set win over the Lapentti brothers to the 3-2 win over Ecuador . Since then, Tecău has played 20 games for Romania, in which he recorded eleven wins in doubles (with different partners).
2004–2007: First Challenger title and ATP debut
In 2004, six more double titles followed in future tournaments, three of them alongside Mergea, two together with Gabriel Moraru and one with Alex Kuznetsov . In August 2004, Tecau and Mergea won their first Challenger title in Timișoara . Then they got a wildcard for the Bucharest tournament , but on their ATP debut they were defeated by Karsten Braasch and Philipp Kohlschreiber . Tecău also won three future titles in the individual this year.
At the beginning of 2005 he celebrated two more Future victories, with 326th place, he achieved his best individual placement to date. He was less successful in doubles, but stayed in the top 500 of the world rankings.
In 2006 Tecau tried to gain a foothold in Challenger tournaments, but it stayed with two semi-finals in Mexico City and Lexington . From now on he concentrated more on the double; he moved into the finals of a Challenger tournament four times in 2006, but remained without a tournament win.
This changed when he again won the Challenger tournament in his hometown Brașov in September 2007 at the side of Florin Mergea and made it into the top 200 for the first time.
2008–2009: Grand Slam debut, entry into the Top 100 and first ATP finals
In 2008, two more joint Challenger victories followed in Cherbourg-Octeville and Constanța as well as three Challenger titles in Milan , San Marino and Eckental alongside the Swiss Yves Allegro . In addition, Tecău played for the first time in the main round of a Grand Slam tournament; he reached the second round in Paris (with Mergea) and in New York (with Allegro). At the end of the year he was listed in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time.
In January 2009, Tecău moved into the round of 16 of the Australian Open alongside his compatriot and coach Andrei Pavel , and in May he also reached his first final at an ATP tournament with Pavel in Kitzbühel . After a second round defeat at the French Open , Tecau and Pavel reached the second round again at Wimbledon , where they were only defeated by the later semi-finalists Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman in the fifth set with 12:14. The second ATP final followed in Stuttgart in July , this time alongside Victor Hănescu . At the end of 2009 Tecău was ranked 46th in the world.
2010–2011: ATP title and Wimbledon finals
At the beginning of 2010 Tecau was able to celebrate his first ATP title in Auckland alongside New Zealander Marcus Daniell . After a Challenger title in Marrakech in March, the second ATP title followed in Casablanca in April , this time with the Swede Robert Lindstedt . With him he was able to win another title in 's-Hertogenbosch in June and move into the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at Wimbledon . However, Jürgen Melzer and Philipp Petzschner won this . Just two weeks later, in Båstad , Sweden , again alongside Lindstedt, the fourth and, in August, the fifth ATP title of the season in New Haven . At the US Open, Tecau and Lindstedt were eliminated in the round of 16. At the end of the season, there were four first round defeats in a row, which meant that the qualification for the ATP World Tour Finals 2010 was missed.
In early 2011, Tecau and Lindstedt reached the final at the ATP tournament in Brisbane , but had to give up after the first set due to a calf injury at Lindstedt. They also had to give up their first round match early at the Australian Open . At the ATP tournament in Zagreb in February, Tecau played with Dick Norman , with whom he won the title straight away. After two first round defeats with changing partners, Tecau was able to win a tournament in the ATP World Tour 500 category for the first time in Acapulco together with Victor Hănescu . From March he played again with Lindstedt and in April they won their next title in Casablanca . At the French Open , the two failed in the quarter-finals to the eventual tournament winners Max Mirny and Daniel Nestor . After a narrow defeat in the final in 's-Hertogenbosch , Tecău and Lindstedt reached the final in Wimbledon as they did last year. Against the Bryan brothers, however, they lost again after three sets. After successfully defending their title in Båstad and losing the final in Washington , they reached a Grand Slam quarter-finals at the US Open for the third time in a row, but narrowly failed to Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini . In October Tecau and Lindstedt were able to return the favor to Mirny and Nestor in Beijing for the French Open defeat; they reached another final, in which they were defeated, however, as in Washington Michaël Llodra and Nenad Zimonjić . Due to their success, the two were qualified for the first time for the ATP World Tour Finals in November 2011 , where they were eliminated in the preliminary round with just one win from three games.
2012: Australian Open victory in mixed
In January 2012, Tecau and Lindstedt reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open for the first time, but were eliminated there despite a match ball against the Bryan brothers. Tecău also competed in mixed, where he won his first Grand Slam title together with Bethanie Mattek-Sands . During the first half of the year, he reached the Rotterdam and Madrid finals with Robert Lindstedt . In April Tecau won his home tournament in Bucharest for the first time ; in 's-Hertogenbosch he and Lindstedt repeated their 2010 success. This time they were eliminated in the second round of the French Open . Things went much better again at Wimbledon , where they made it into the final for the third time in a row. But as in 2010 and 2011, they had to admit defeat, this time the unset pairing Frederik Nielsen and Jonathan Marray rather surprising. In Båstad the second successful title defense followed after 2010 and 2011; Tecau and Lindstedt won the tournament without losing a set. Shortly before the Olympic Games in London , it was announced that Tecău would lead the Romanian delegation as the flag bearer at the opening ceremony. Tecau joined the games in the doubles competition with Adrian Ungur , with whom he had not played a tournament since 2004. They were eliminated in two sets against Canadians Vasek Pospisil and Daniel Nestor in the opening round .
2013–2016: First Grand Slam title in doubles and silver medal
The 2013 season played Tecau with Max Mirny , with whom he won three tournaments and stood in two other finals. The 2014 season went far better , when he started with Jean-Julien Rojer as a partner. The two won a total of eight titles, including three in the World Tour 500 category ; they also reached another final. At the World Tour Finals, they were eliminated from the preliminary round without a win.
In 2015 he and Rojer started with a final in Sydney and a title win in Rotterdam . At the Australian Open and the French Open , they each reached the semifinals. In Wimbledon , the two finally managed to win their first title in a Grand Slam tournament.
Together with Florin Mergea , he won the silver medal in the doubles competition at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .
