Defending champion in the singles was David Nalbandian , who was eliminated in the second round this year. In the final Radek Štěpánek defeated the top seeded Gaël Monfils ; the triumph in Washington was Štěpánek's first title since 2009 and the fifth of his career. In doubles, Mardy Fish and Mark Knowles were the defending champions, but Knowles competed with another partner this year and was eliminated in the quarterfinals. In the final Michaël Llodra and Nenad Zimonjić were able to prevail against Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecău . The victory in Washington is their first joint title and their first title of the season; for Llodra it is the 19th, for Zimonjić the 40th double title.
The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 48 players, that of the double competition consisted of 16 pairs. The 16 top seeded players in the singles each got a bye into the second round. The total prize pool was $ 1,049,760; total financial liabilities were $ 1,286,260.
The qualification took place from August 29th to 30th, 2011. Six qualifying places that entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament were played out. There were also two lucky losers.
