life and career

2005–2007: Successes as a junior and first experiences in future tournaments

Ričardas Berankis started playing tennis at the age of two. From 2005 he played on the junior tour and was soon able to celebrate tournament victories there. His greatest successes were winning the US Open 2007 and reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open 2007 and the Wimbledon Championships 2007 . He finished 2007 in first place in the junior world rankings.

In 2006 Berankis also gained experience at future tournaments in the adult sector. In March 2007 he was able to win a future tournament in Portugal for the first time. In May 2007 he was appointed to the Lithuanian Davis Cup team and was able to win three of six games there. In the further course of the year Berankis reached a future semifinals, and ended the year in 707th place in the tennis world rankings .

2008–2009: Challenger successes and ATP debut

In 2008 Ričardas Berankis played more tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour . In June 2008 Berankis was able to qualify for the first time for the main draw of an ATP tournament in Warsaw . Although he was eliminated in the first round by Wayne Odesnik , in July 2008 he was the first Lithuanian ever to be included in the top 500 in the world rankings (his country's previous record holder was Rolandas Muraška , who made it to 575th in 2001). He received a wild card for the Umag ATP tournament , but lost to Fabio Fognini in the first round . As the winner of last year's junior competition, Berankis got a wildcard for qualifying for the US Open 2008 , and after defeating the top 100 player Serhij Stachowskyj made it into the third qualifying round, where he narrowly failed to Björn Phau .

The year 2009 began for Berankis with a final participation in a future tournament in Germany. In March 2009 he contributed two individual victories to the 3-2 win over Georgia in the Davis Cup, but then in July 2009 he had no chance against Slovenia as did his team, which lost 5-0. In the further course of the year Berankis reached the semi-finals of a Challenger tournament twice in Qarshi and Champaign , and he was also in two other future finals.

2010: Two Challenger titles and entry into the top 100

After he had again reached a Challenger semifinals in Salinas in January 2010 , Ričardas Berankis was able to qualify for the ATP tournament in San José in February 2010 . There he won his first ATP match against Robby Ginepri , and after defeating Björn Phau even reached the quarter-finals, where he narrowly lost against the eventual tournament winner Fernando Verdasco . As a result, he entered the top 200 in the world rankings for the first time. After beating Great Britain 3-2 in the Davis Cup with Lithuania thanks to two individual victories, Berankis took part in qualifying for the 2010 French Open . There he failed in the third qualifying round to Martin Fischer . However, he was not discouraged by this, but won his first Challenger title a week later in Nottingham by defeating Go Soeda . At Wimbledon , he made the third attempt to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time and even reached the second round by defeating Carsten Ball . There, however, he lost in four sets against Feliciano López, who was placed in 22nd position . In August 2010 Berankis reached the final of a Challenger tournament for the second time in Vancouver , but lost there to Dudi Sela . After successfully qualifying for a Grand Slam tournament at the 2010 US Open again, he defeated Ryan Sweeting in the first round . In the second round he met Jürgen Melzer , who was 13th , to whom he was defeated in a tight match in five sets. A week after the US Open, Berankis competed with Lithuania in the Davis Cup relegation game for a place in Europe / Africa Group I. He won a singles and a double, but could not prevent the 3-2 defeat against Slovenia. Due to a viral illness, Berankis had to cancel several tournaments afterwards, but was able to reach a Challenger final at the end of the year in Helsinki . There he benefited from the defending champion Michał Przysiężny and won his second title this year. As a result, he rose to 85th place in the world rankings, making him the youngest player in the top 100 at the end of the year.

2011: Establishment on the ATP Tour and injury concerns

The year 2011 began for Ričardas Berankis with the successful qualification for the ATP tournament in Brisbane . There he defeated Arnaud Clément in the first main round , but then lost in a tight three-set match against Florian Mayer, who was in 7th position . Also in his Australian Open debut, Berankis was able to move into the second round with a three-set win over local hero Marinko Matosevic . There he met the ailing top 30 player David Nalbandian , who gave up after less than an hour of play with a 2-0 set deficit. In his first third round match at a Grand Slam tournament, Berankis was clearly defeated by David Ferrer, who was later placed in 7th position, due to an error rate that was too high . In February 2011 Ričardas Berankis entered the ATP tournament in San José and defeated there in the first round Benjamin Becker, who was sixth . Next he won a hard-fought three-set match against Donald Young , and thus reached the quarter-finals as in the previous year. There, however, he lost in two tight sets against the eventual tournament winner Milos Raonic . Also in the following ATP tournaments in Memphis and Delray Beach Berankis was eliminated in the first round against the eventual tournament winner Andy Roddick and Juan Martín del Potro . In the subsequent Davis Cup game against Estonia, Berankis could not prevent the 2: 3 defeat against the Estonians despite second individual victories. After he was eliminated in the second and first round of the Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami , Ričardas Berankis had to take a longer injury break due to groin problems. As a result, he missed both the French Open and Wimbledon . After a break of nearly four months, Berankis made his comeback in Atlanta in July 2011 . In singles he was eliminated in the first round, but in doubles he was able to reach the semi-finals together with Xavier Malisse .

From 2012: ATP title win in doubles and two singles finals

In the 2012 season , he was the first Lithuanian to reach his first final on the World Tour in Los Angeles in July . Berankis, who only reached the peloton after successfully qualifying, had no chance against Sam Querrey with 0: 6 and 2: 6. His greatest success in the following season was the repeated reaching of the third round at the Australian Open after 2011 . In 2014 he won two tournaments on the Challenger Tour in Astana and Andria . The following year , Berankis won the doubles competition at the ATP tournament in Houston together with Teimuras Gabashvili in April . After entering the competition as a successor at all, they defeated Treat Huey and Scott Lipsky 6: 4 and 6: 4 in the final after three opening successes . At the end of the season Berankis also won the title at the Challenger tournament in Ortisei in Val Gardena . In April 2016 he won the Challenger in Gwangju and Nanjing within two weeks in April, defeating Grega Žemlja in two sets each in the final . On May 23, 2016, he reached his previous career record with rank 50 in the world rankings. At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro Berankis was eliminated in singles in the first round against John Millman without a game win. After playing through the season with pain to the end, he had to undergo hip surgery, which is why he was out until May 2017. Although he suffered a first round defeat on his comeback at the Challenger tournament in Samarqand , he immediately won the title in Schymkent at his second tournament since his injury. In October Berankis managed to get into his second final on the World Tour in Moscow , but lost out against Damir Džumhur with 2: 6, 6: 1 and 4: 6. In the following season, the tournament victory at the Challenger in Saint-Brieuc was his only title win. The 2019 season on the Challenger Tour was much more successful . In January Berankis secured the title at the Challenger tournament in Rennes , followed two months later by winning the title in Drummondville . In May he won his twelfth career title on the Challenger Tour in Busan , the 13th career title and fourth of the current season he finally achieved in August in Vancouver .

Remarks

For a while, Berankis was listed as Richard Berankis on the English-language ATP website , which is closer to the Lithuanian pronunciation of his name Ričardas than Ricardas (with a hard k).
