He played his first game on the ATP World Tour in January 2010 at the tournament in Brisbane , where he met the then number twelve in the world rankings Radek Štěpánek in the first round . While he was able to keep up in the first set, nothing worked in the second set and so in the end he lost 4: 6 and 0: 6. In the following two years he was registered for the Brisbane tournament. In 2011 he was given a wildcard and in 2012 he made it into the main field via qualification. However, he lost his opening game both times. In 2013 he also played at his home tournament and won a game on the ATP World Tour for the first time. In his opening game he beat the Japanese Tatsuma Itō in two sets. In the second round he met the top seeded Brit Andy Murray , who was also the defending champion. After clearly losing the first set, Millman played big and decided the second set in his favor. Ultimately, he lost the game 1: 6, 7: 5 and 3: 6.
Millman won his first title on the ATP Challenger Tour in October 2010. He won in Sacramento against Robert Kendrick in straight sets 6: 3 and 6: 2. He won his second title in this category on February 2, 2013. He won the final in Burnie against the French Stéphane Robert in three sets with 6: 2, 4: 6 and 6: 0.
Millman has been working with former German tennis professional Jonas Lütjen since summer 2018. At their first joint tournament, the German Open at Hamburg's Rothenbaum in July 2018, Millman reached the second round after a 7: 5, 6: 3 against Jan-Lennard Struff . There he lost to the top seeded Dominic Thiem . At the Masters in Cincinnati , Millman was number 1 in qualifying, but had to retire due to injury when the score was 5: 5 against the American Tim Smyczek . At the last tournament before the US Open in Winston-Salem , John Millman lost in the opening round before he caused a big surprise at the US Open when he beat the number 2 Swiss Roger Federer in 3 hours in the night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium 35 min with 3: 6, 7: 5, 7: 6 (9: 7), 7: 6 (7: 3). Only in the quarterfinals Millman had to admit defeat to a resurgent Novak Đoković 3: 6, 4: 6, 4: 6. As a result, Millman improved from 54th place to 37th place in the world rankings and was thus placed higher than ever before. Following the US Open, Millman paused until the Masters tournament in Shanghai where he, although seeded at 1, lost in the first round of qualifying against the Moldovan Radu Albot .
