Jan-Lennard Struff (born April 25, 1990 in Warstein ) is a German tennis player .
Career
He played his first game on the ATP World Tour in 2012 at the MercedesCup in Stuttgart, for which he and Robin Kern received a wildcard for the doubles competition from the tournament management . They lost the opening game 4-6 and 3-6 against the German pairing Dustin Brown and Christopher Kas . In the 2012 season, Struff won four singles tournaments on the ITF Future Tour and was in the finals of an ATP Challenger tournament in Loughborough and Madrid . In doubles he won two titles on the Future Tour in a total of six finals. In 2011 and 2012 Jan-Lennard Struff won the German individual championship .
Struff achieved his greatest successes on the ATP Tour in 2014 when he reached three semi-finals. At the tournament in Marseille the end came against world number ten Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (6: 7, 5: 7), in Munich against Italian Fabio Fognini (3: 6, 1: 6) and in Metz against eventual winner David Goffin ( 6: 7, 3: 6). In May 2014 he won his first title on the Challenger Tour in Heilbronn . In the final he defeated Márton Fucsovics 6-2, 7-6 5 . Thanks to the tournament victory and further successes over the course of the season, he improved to 46th place in the ATP world rankings by October 2014 , his best placement to date.
Due to a lack of sporting success, Struff separated from the coaching duo Christoph Reichert, former Bundesliga coach in Hagen, and Ute Strakerjahn in July 2015. The new coach was Carsten Arriens , former Davis Cup team boss who was divorced in the dispute. Ute Strakerjahn had signed a coaching contract with Struff in 2011, according to which she participates with a share of 20 percent of the prize money and all of Struff's advertising income. The regulation should continue to be effective for six years after the end of the contract. In 2016, Strakerjahn filed a lawsuit and demanded additional payment and a share in the income until 2022. Both the Arnsberg Regional Court in 2017 in the first instance and the Hamm Higher Regional Court in 2018 in the second instance agreed with Strakerjahn and awarded her almost EUR 275,000.
The Challenger victories in Stettin and Orléans followed in autumn 2015, and in 2016 Struff followed up on the same level in Alphen aan den Rijn and Mons .
At the beginning of November 2016, the German achieved another success: At the BNP Paribas Masters , Struff was able to defeat the reigning US Open champion and third in the world rankings Stan Wawrinka 3: 6, 7: 6, 7: 6 in the second round . This was the first time he beat a top 20 player and made it into the third round of an ATP Masters for the first time .
In October 2018 he and his partner, the Japanese Ben McLachlan , defeated the duo Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus 6: 4 and 7: 5 in the finals of the doubles competition of the Rakuten Open in Tokyo and thus celebrated his first title on the ATP Tour . In January 2019 he was able to confirm this success at the tournament in Auckland with another victory with his partner Ben McLachlan over the duo Raven Klaasen and Michael Venus. In the individual, he was also in the semi-finals. At the French Open in June 2019 he made it to the round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, in which he failed in three sets against the number one on the seed list Novak Đoković . At the ATP tournament in Stuttgart , Struff reached the semi-finals, which made him 35th in the individual ranking, his best placement to date.
Davis Cup
In 2015 , Struff made his debut for the German Davis Cup team against France and was 14th in the world rankings in his opening match. Gilles Simon in over four hours with 6: 7, 6: 2, 7: 6, 2: 6 and 8:10. He won his second match against Nicolas Mahut 7: 6, 6: 3. In addition, Struff was able to achieve the decisive third win against Hubert Hurkacz (7: 6, 6: 4, 6: 1) in the Davis Cup relegation match against Poland in September 2016, thereby ensuring that the German team remained in the world group. Again in 2017, Struff secured against Portugal with wins in doubles with debutant Tim Pütz and after defending match point in singles against João Sousa to remain in the world group of the Davis Cup . In 2018 Pütz and Struff - also known as "Tim and Struffi" - won their doubles against Australia and Spain.
engagement
Struff speaks publicly on the subject of climate protection . He joined an announcement by players Nick Kyrgios , Novak Đoković or Julia Görges that they would make a donation as part of the 2019/2020 bushfires in Australia to send a message to everyone. In an interview with Der Spiegel in 2020 he said about the fires and the climate crisis : “It's ubiquitous. Just a tragedy what happens here. When you see someone pulling koalas out of the fire on the news, it's very sad. I don't want to hide that either. "
