Hubert Hurkacz (born February 11, 1997 in Wroclaw ) is a Polish tennis player .

Career

Hurkacz, who started playing tennis at the age of five, already competed in various tournaments on the junior tour. He took part in all four Grand Slam tournaments and reached the double-finals at the 2015 Australian Open with Alex Molčan . There they had to admit defeat to the Australians Jake Delaney and Marc Polmans in three sets . His best placement in the junior world rankings was a combined 29th place in January 2015.

Since 2014, Hurkacz has also been playing tournaments on the professional tour regularly, mainly on the lower-class ITF Future Tour and ATP Challenger Tour . So far, he has won two singles and three doubles on the Future Tour.

After being listed outside the Top 1000 at the beginning, he made it into the Top 700 in the world after winning his first title on the Future Tour in September 2015. In the following years he worked his way up the rankings without being able to show any major successes on the Challenger Tour. In March 2016 , Hurkacz made his debut for the Polish Davis Cup team against Argentina . He lost his first individual to Leonardo Mayer and won the meaningless last game against Renzo Olivo . In the playoff game against Germany he was used again, but lost both singles. Overall he has a score of 2: 8 there. In 2017 he won another single title and two double titles on the Future Tour and was in his first final on the Challenger Tour in Shenzhen , which he lost in three sets to Radu Albot . He finished the year 238th in singles and 329th in doubles.

The year 2018 should be his most successful so far. He qualified for a main draw on the ATP World Tour for the first time in Budapest . There he lost his opening match against Lorenzo Sonego . After failing in qualification at the Australian Open , Hurkacz made it into the main field at the French Open . He won his first round match against Tennys Sandgren , then number 54 in the world, in four sets, but lost in the second round to Marin Čilić . The following week he took part in the Challenger in Poznan , where he made it to the finals. He clearly defeated the top seeded Japanese Taro Daniel 6: 1, 6: 1 and celebrated his first title on the Challenger Tour. Through these achievements, he reached 119th place, his best placement in the world rankings. At Wimbledon he also moved into the main draw - as a lucky loser - where he was eliminated in the first round against Bernard Tomic .
