Controversy over right-wing extremist ideas

As part of Sandgren's successful performance at the Australian Open 2018 , where Sandgren only failed in the quarter-finals, a controversy arose over Sandgren's political attitudes. Sandgren had repeatedly forwarded messages on Twitter from well-known activists of the racist alt-right movement, such as Sebastian Gorka , over a long period of time . Various tweets from Sandgren, around 2,000 in total, had been deleted the morning after his round of 16 victory over Fabio Fognini . Sandgren said he did not support right-wing extremist ideologies and would "only find some content interesting". Among the deleted tweets is a comment written by Sandgren himself, in which Sandgren expressed homophobic thinking: "I stumbled into a gay bar last night ... my eyes are still bleeding".
