Frances Tiafoe (born January 20, 1998 in Hyattsville , Maryland ) is an American tennis player .

Career

Frances Tiafoe initially played mainly on the ATP Challenger Tour and the ITF Future Tour . He made his debut in singles on the ATP World Tour in July 2014 at the Citi Open , where he lost in two sets against Yevgeny Donskoy in the opening round .

In doubles at the US Open, the first appearance on World Tour level took place. Here Tiafoe formed a double pair with Michael Mmoh . They won their first round game, but then lost in the next round against Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram clearly in straight sets.

After winning a match at Wimbledon for the first time in 2017 and a smooth second round defeat against Alexander Zverev , Tiafoe reached a new record with position 62 in the world. In February 2018, he won his first ATP tournament in Delray Beach . In September of that year he made his debut for the US Davis Cup team in the semifinals against Croatia .

Private

At the beginning of July 2020, he announced that he was sick with COVID-19 .
