Peter Gojowczyk (born July 15, 1989 in Munich ) is a German tennis player .

life and career

Until 2009: First successes in future tournaments

Peter Gojowczyk started playing tennis at the age of four. After playing some tournaments as a junior in 2005, he switched to the professional camp in 2006 and from then on initially played on the Future Tour. In September and October 2007 he won his first two titles in Mexico and thus entered the top 500 of the tennis world rankings .

At the beginning of 2008, two more future titles followed in Austria, after which Gowojczyk increasingly took part in challenger tournaments. There he never got past the second round. In Munich and Halle he tried to qualify for ATP tournaments for the first time, but did not make it into the main field. In September 2008 Peter Gojowczyk was able to win three future titles in India and Thailand within three weeks and then made it into the top 300 in the world rankings for the first time.

The final breakthrough was still a long time coming. In September 2009 Gojowczyk briefly fell back to 619 in the world rankings. Among other things, through his first Challenger quarter-final participation in Eckental , where he defeated the former top 20 player Dominik Hrbatý , he made it back into the top 400 by the end of the year.

2010–2011: ATP debut, victory at the German Championships and first Challenger final

The first highlight of 2010 for Peter Gojowczyk came in May at the ATP tournament in Munich , where he was able to qualify for an ATP main field for the first time. He was even able to win the first set against Marcos Baghdatis , who was seeded in 5th position , but ultimately had to admit defeat to the later semi-finalist in three sets. In the further course of the season two Challenger quarter-finals followed in Oberstaufen and Bangkok , where he was able to defeat the top 100 player Andreas Beck . At the end of the year, Peter Gojowczyk won the German tennis championships in Biberach by beating Kevin Deden in the final .

In August 2011, Peter Gojowczyk achieved his greatest success to date: At the Challenger tournament in Manerbio , he made it into the final as a qualifier without losing a set, defeating two seeded players with Thiemo de Bakker and Martin Kližan . In the final he won the first set against Adrian Ungur , but ultimately lost the match in just three sets. In the further course of the season, Gojowczyk reached two more Challenger quarter-finals, and ended the season on his best place to date, 241.

2012 to today: Grand Slam debut and first successes on the ATP World Tour

In January 2012, Peter Gojowczyk took part in qualifying for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the Australian Open . With three straight two-set victories, including Grega Žemlja , who was in second place, Gojowczyk qualified with ease and met Donald Young in the first main round . After losing the first two sets, he fought his way back into the match and into the decisive fifth set, which he lost 6-2 to the favorite.

In April 2012, Peter Gojowczyk reached the semi-finals at the Challenger tournament in Saint-Brieuc . Against Augustin Gensse he lost the game in three sets despite leading the set. Before that, he won against the two seeded French Kenny de Schepper and Maxime Teixeira . Thanks to this result, he landed in the top 200 for the first time in the subsequently published world rankings with position 194.

At the US Open 2013 Gojowczyk reached the second round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time with a four-set victory against the Dutchman Igor Sijsling . In August 2013 he was among the top 150 world rankings in men's singles for the first time in his career.

At the ATP tournament in Doha Gojowczyk was in the semifinals of an ATP tournament for the first time at the beginning of 2014. After surviving qualifications and victories over Dominic Thiem , Philipp Kohlschreiber and Dustin Brown , he narrowly failed against world number one Rafael Nadal with 6: 4, 2: 6 and 3: 6, but secured the highest prize money of his career with 53,800 US dollars. He then qualified for the first time in the main field of the Australian Open 2014 . At the end of the season he reached his best position with 79th place.

In 2017 he won the tournament in Metz as a qualifier . In the final, he defeated Benoît Paire in straight sets and moved up to 66th place in the world rankings.

Davis Cup

Gojowczyk caused a surprise on his Davis Cup debut in April 2014 for Germany against France , when he defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga , who was number twelve in the world rankings, in five sets.
