He also reached the semifinals in Halle and the third round of the US Open .

Kohlschreiber has been one of the most important players in the German Davis Cup team since 2007 . Several times he was able to defeat partly stronger players in the Davis Cup. In his debut season in 2007 he won the semifinals in Moscow against Russia's Nikolai Dawydenko in five sets after being behind with a break in the fifth set.

In January 2008 Kohlschreiber celebrated his second title on the ATP World Tour when he defeated the Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final in two sets at the Auckland tournament . At the Australian Open he defeated Andy Roddick in round three, then lost the round of 16 against Jarkko Nieminen . In the subsequent quarter-finals in Spain he defeated Tommy Robredo , to whom he had previously been defeated in the second round of the French Open, in three sets. He won his second individual against Fernando Verdasco 8: 6 in the fifth round, but Germany lost the game 2: 3 in the end.

2010-2011

The year 2010 began Kohlschreiber in Auckland , where he also reached the semi-finals. At the Australian Open , he was eliminated in the third round against Rafael Nadal . At the ATP Masters Series tournament in Monte Carlo , he made it to the quarter-finals. At the French Open he was able to advance into round three, in which he was defeated by Fernando Verdasco . At Wimbledon he lost to Roddick in the third round. At the Masters Series tournament in Toronto , he was in the quarterfinals, but lost there just against Nadal. At the US Open he lost to Gilles Simon in the second round . On the sidelines of the Davis Cup game against South Africa, in which he contributed to the 5-0 victory with his three-set victory over Rik De Voest , he announced his future cooperation on probation with Andy Murray's ex-coach Miles Maclagan . Kohlschreiber played his way to the semi-finals at the Open de Moselle in Metz, where he was again defeated by Frenchman Gilles Simon. At his next tournament, the China Open in Beijing, he beat Fernando Verdasco in round one, but then lost to John Isner . In Shanghai he had to give up in the second set of his first round match against Roddick. At the Bank Austria TennisTrophy in Vienna, he reached the quarter-finals, but could not compete due to adductor problems.

Kohlschreiber started 2011 in Doha , where he failed in round two after a hard-fought game against Ivo Karlović . A week before the Australian Open , where he lost to Tomáš Berdych in round two , he played his way to the quarter-finals in Auckland , which he lost in three sets to David Ferrer . In Rotterdam and Dubai he reached round two, but then failed to Robin Söderling and Philipp Petzschner respectively . In the first round of the Davis Cup world group in 2011, Kohlschreiber hit the German number 1 again. He defeated Ivan Dodig in five sets after defending a match point in the fourth set. In the fourth individual he was defeated by Marin Čilić in three sets. At the first Masters tournament of the year in Indian Wells , Kohlschreiber won after a bye in round one against Tim Smyczek after defending three match points in three sets. In round three he was able to defeat number 4 in the world, Robin Söderling , 7: 6 and 6: 4, where he had to fend off five set balls in the first set. He then lost in two sets (6: 7, 6: 7) against Juan Martín del Potro . In Monte Carlo he lost to Roger Federer in round two . Kohlschreiber and Petzschner then decided the final of the World Team Cup in the Düsseldorf Rochus Club with their double victory over Juan Ignacio Chela and Máximo González . He then lost to Sam Querrey in the first round of the French Open .

Kohlschreiber secured his third career title at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle. On the way to the final, in which he defeated Philipp Petzschner 7: 6, 2: 0 (abandonment), he defeated u. a. Lleyton Hewitt and Gaël Monfils. In Wimbledon he lost his first round match against the Uzbek Denis Istomin 6: 4, 3: 6, 3: 6 and 3: 6. Weeks later he lost to the Spaniard Nicolás Almagro in the round of 16 at the tournament at Hamburg's Rothenbaum .

2012-2015

2012 was the most successful season of his career so far for Kohlschreiber. At the Australian Open he reached the round of 16 at the beginning of the season. In May he won the tournament in Munich for the second time, defeating Marin Čilić in straight sets in the final . The lawn season was also very successful; in Halle he only lost in the semi-finals against eventual winner Tommy Haas . At Wimbledon he succeeded in taking revenge with a five-set win over Haas, before reaching the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time with three consecutive three-set wins. There he was defeated by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sentences. In the 2012 season there was a dispute between Kohlschreiber and team boss Patrik Kühnen after Kohlschreiber had canceled his illness for the first round game against Argentina. Since he did not attend the meeting as a spectator, he was also criticized by Tommy Haas. As a result, Kohlschreiber was not considered by Kühnen for the relegation game against Australia, although at that time he was the best-placed German player in the world rankings. Kohlschreiber came under criticism at the end of the tournament in Kitzbühel . Although he reached the final, he lost it in three sets against Robin Haase . Since he sustained an injury at this game, Kohlschreiber canceled his participation in the Olympic Games in London . He was heavily criticized in the media for this, including by former players such as Boris Becker and Michael Stich . Nevertheless, Kohlschreiber made it into the top 20 of the world rankings for the first time by taking part in the finals in Kitzbühel. After the tournament he was ranked 16th. At the US Open , he made it to the round of 16 for the first time with a five-set win against John Isner , with Kohlschreiber reaching the second week in three of four Grand Slam tournaments in the 2012 season.

The year 2013 started positively for Kohlschreiber. At the side of Christopher Kas , he defeated the double rivals Julian Knowle and Filip Polášek in two sets at the ATP tournament in Doha . He then reached the semi-finals in Barcelona and the finals in Munich and Stuttgart . In September Kohlschreiber played for the Davis Cup team in singles. However, after winning the first match, he called in sick. Later at the US Open 2013 , Kohlschreiber failed in the second round to Rafael Nadal .

With a 4-1 win over Spain at the Davis Cup 2014 , Kohlschreiber got off to a good start in 2014. In March there were disputes between Kohlschreiber and the team boss Carsten Arriens . Due to his many injury-related failures, Kohlschreiber von Arriens was eventually excluded from the Davis Cup team. At the Düsseldorf Open 2014 he won his fifth title on the World Tour with a final victory over Ivo Karlović . At the subsequent French Open he reached the third round, in which he was defeated by Andy Murray 6: 3, 3: 6, 3: 6, 6: 4 and 10:12. In the second round of the US Open 2014 , he could not prevail against Novak Đoković .

After the dispute and the subsequent dismissal of Arren, Kohlschreiber returned to the German Davis Cup team in March 2015. At the ATP tournament in Munich , he just lost in the final against Andy Murray in three sets. In Kitzbühel Kohlschreiber won the tournament against Paul-Henri Mathieu and a short time later he reached the third round at the US Open . In the autumn he managed a 4-1 win against the Dominican Republic with the German Davis Cup team.

Since 2016

In 2016 , he won his two singles against Lukáš Rosol and world number seven Tomáš Berdych in the 2: 3 first round defeat against the Czech Republic , benefiting from Berdych's abandonment when he scored 2: 0 sets. Kohlschreiber lost the double on Philipp Petzschner's side . In the same year he won the final in Munich in three sets against Dominic Thiem . Only a few weeks later, Kohlschreiber lost to Thiem in the final in Stuttgart .

Davis Cup 2017 , the German Davis Cup team was eliminated in the first round against Belgium. After this defeat, Kohlschreiber celebrated his 400th victory on the ATP Tour in Indian Wells in March of the same year . His opponent Oleksandr Dolhopolow gave up in the second set (6: 7 and 1: 1). Kohlschreiber couldn't win the final in Marrakech . He lost to Borna Ćorić in three sets. At the tournament in Kitzbühel , however, he prevailed in the final against João Sousa 6: 3 and 6: 4.

In 2018 , in the game against Spain, he lost the decisive match against David Ferrer after a 2-1 set lead, the last set 5-7. At the subsequent tournament in Munich he was defeated in the final to Alexander Zverev 3: 6 and 3: 6.

In 2019 he was eliminated from the Indian Wells Masters in the quarter-finals against Gaël Monfils. He had previously won against Nick Kyrgios, who recently won the tournament in Acapulco, and world number one Novak Đoković. He became the oldest player who managed his maiden win against the number 1.
