Career
1999 to 2006
Melzer made his debut on the ATP Tour in 1999 when he competed at the BA-CA Tennis Trophy in Vienna. After a 7: 6, 2: 6, 6: 3 victory over Lars Burgsmüller , he lost there in the second round with 4: 6 and 0: 6 against Nicolas Kiefer .
The following year he qualified for the Wimbledon Championships , where he was defeated by Mark Philippoussis in four sets in the first round . Further first round defeats followed at the ATP tournaments Grand Prix St. Pölten and Generali Open in Kitzbühel.
In 2001 Melzer won the Challenger tournament in Mönchengladbach . He also reached the second round of the BA-CA Tennis Trophy in Vienna after a 6: 7, 6: 4, 6: 4 win over Fabrice Santoro . In the second round he was defeated by Michel Kratochvil from Switzerland in two sets.
In 2002 Melzer was twice in the quarter-finals (St. Pölten and Vienna) and once in the semi-finals ( Umag , Croatia) at ATP tournaments .
In 2003 he reached his first final; in Newport he only had to admit defeat in three sets to Robby Ginepri in the final . He also reached the quarterfinals in Houston .
In 2004 Melzer made it into the third round of the Australian Open , in which he was eliminated by Sjeng Schalken . Melzer played a strong clay court season: in Houston and at the German Open in Hamburg he reached the quarterfinals; in Hamburg he defeated Marat Safin 6: 4, 6: 4 and then lost to Lleyton Hewitt ; Melzer also made it to the semi-finals in St. Pölten, where he lost to Xavier Malisse . He also reached the quarter-finals at the Canada Masters in Toronto; he defeated three top 20 players in the world rankings ( Dominik Hrbatý , Andre Agassi and Fernando González ) before losing to Nicolas Kiefer in three sets. He also reached the third round at the US Open . He finished the 2004 season in 40th place in the ATP Champions Race .
In 2005 Melzer reached the third round of the Grand Slam tournaments Australian Open , French Open and Wimbledon . At the US Open , he failed in round one. He also made it to the semi-finals twice ( San José ), once to the quarter-finals ( Adelaide ) and for the second time to the ATP final in St. Pölten. He was also able to convince in the double competitions at the Grand Slam tournaments. In the first round of the Australian Open, for example, he defeated the top seeded duo Daniel Nestor / Mark Knowles and was only defeated by the later title winners in the semifinals.
In 2006 Melzer was eliminated in the first round of all Grand Slam tournaments, but reached a final (Houston) and two semi-finals (Munich, Newport) on the tour before he won his first tournament in September 2006. At the 300,000 US dollar ATP tournament in Bucharest , he beat the number five seeded Italian Filippo Volandri 6: 1, 7: 5 in the final . After ten wins in a row, he lost a week later in the final of Metz Novak Đoković . At the following BA-CA Tennis Trophy in the Wiener Stadthalle he lost in the quarterfinals to Andy Roddick, who was number three, with 4: 6 and 3: 6.
2007 to 2009
Melzer started 2007 in 41st place with a good starting position: he had to defend almost no points in the first half of the year. He started with a defeat in Doha to qualifier Federico Luzzi . A week later in Sydney he moved into the semi-finals after a good game, but because of a gastrointestinal virus he had to cancel the game against James Blake . At the Australian Open , he defeated Ivo Karlović in three sets in the first round . In round two against Tommy Robredo he again suffered from a viral illness and he lost in three sets. He also suffered a wrist injury. At the end of February he returned to the Las Vegas tour and reached the final, in which he was defeated by Lleyton Hewitt 4-6 and 6-7. In the following Masters Series tournaments he lost in round one. It wasn't until Houston, where he had many points to defend, that he made it to the quarter-finals. Despite losing to Mariano Zabaleta , Melzer only lost one place and was still in the top 30. After that, there was a small dry spell, apart from a quarter-finals in Munich and the second round at the French Open , where he was clearly defeated by Juan Mónaco . In Halle Melzer lost to Nikolai Dawydenko in three sets and in doubles he had to give up due to a wrist injury. Then a tendon tear in the wrist was diagnosed - this meant a compulsory break of about half a year. In Montreal he celebrated his comeback and offered a great match against the American James Blake, but he lost just 5: 7 and 6: 7. A week later at the Masters Series event in Cincinnati , Melzer played against Ivo Karlović; he won both tiebreaks against the Croatian and celebrated his first victory after his injury. In round two he played against Mario Ančić , another Croat; this time Melzer won in three sets. He then lost in two sets to his feared opponent Lleyton Hewitt.
At the US Open Melzer lost in round two to Juan Martín del Potro . In the week after, he went to his title defense in Bucharest. In the first round he lost against the Italian Andreas Seppi in three sets and fell out of the top 40 in the world rankings, which meant that he had to give up the position of the best Austrian in the ATP world rankings to Stefan Koubek for the first time since January 2004 . In the Davis Cup delegation game against Brazil, he led Austria back into the world group with three wins.
At the start of the 2008 season he reached the second round at the tournaments in Chennai and Auckland . He also failed in the second round at the Australian Open . At the end of January he reached the final at the Challenger tournament in Breslau , which he lost to Kristof Viegen . In Sunrise he made it to the semifinals. In Pörtschach he lost to Igor Kunitsyn in the quarterfinals. At the Grand Slam tournaments in Paris , London and New York , he came into the third round. In Kitzbühel he reached his first single ATP final of the season, which he lost to Del Potro. At the highlight of the season in Beijing, the Olympic Games , he lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual Olympic champion Rafael Nadal .
Melzer had more success in doubles in 2008. He reached the finals in Auckland, Pörtschach and 's-Hertogenbosch and the Challenger in Breslau; he also won the tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch. In Graz he won a Challenger tournament with his brother Gerald . During the year he played with various partners and replaced Stefan Koubek as the best-placed Austrian in the world rankings.
In 2009 Melzer celebrated his greatest success to date at the home tournament in the Wiener Stadthalle ( category ATP 250 ): He defeated Marin Čilić in the final and won his second ATP tournament. He was eliminated in Umag (against Dawydenko) and in Bangkok (against Gilles Simon ) in the semifinals. He failed in the Grand Slam tournaments in Melbourne (against Andy Murray ), Paris (against Gaël Monfils ) and Wimbledon (against Roddick) each in the third round. In the ATP Masters tournaments of Rome (against Fernando González ) and Shanghai (against Feliciano López ) he left each of the second round. Melzer ended the year at position 28 in the ATP world rankings. In doubles he won the tournaments in Tokyo ( ATP World Tour 500 ) and New Haven alongside Julian Knowle . The two reached the semi-finals of the ATP Masters tournaments in Miami and Shanghai and were defeated by Łukasz Kubot and Oliver Marach in the final in Vienna.
2010/2011 - at the height of his career
With the move into the semi-finals of the French Open in June 2010 (he was defeated there by the eventual tournament winner Nadal in three sets), he celebrated his greatest success to date. At Wimbledon , he was in the round of 16 for the first time and lost there to defending champion Roger Federer . In the final in Hamburg (ATP 500 category) he was defeated by the unseeded Kazakhs Andrei Golubew . In addition, he was in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters (defeat against Nicolás Almagro ) and in the semifinals of Dubai (ATP 500 category) against Michail Juschny . In doubles, he won the ATP tournament in Zagreb alongside Philipp Petzschner . In addition, Melzer was the first Austrian to secure the title in the doubles competition at Wimbledon with Petzschner , which he believes is the greatest success of his career. At the US Open he lost again to Federer in the round of 16. After Melzer had already failed in the round of 16 in Beijing (ATP 500 category), he achieved a new career highlight with a victory over world number one Nadal in the round of 16 of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai - he had none of the last three matches against Nadal Set win lost. In the same week he even won against a total of three world number one: when he won the double competition in Shanghai (partner: Leander Paes ) he also had to overcome the two leaders of the double world rankings, Bob and Mike Bryan , in the semifinals . At the end of October he was able to defend his title in the Wiener Stadthalle . He defeated his compatriot Andreas Haider-Maurer in an exciting final (at 6: 7, 4: 5 deficit he managed his first break, final result: 6: 7 10 , 7: 6 4 , 6: 4) and won his third ATP single title.
Due to his success in 2010, Melzer was also voted Austria's Sportsman of the Year at the beginning of November as the second tennis player after Thomas Muster (1990, 1995) . At the end of 2010 he could also be called the best “combiner”: In a (officially not managed) combined world rankings for singles and doubles on November 1, 2010 he was clearly in the lead (singles 12th, doubles 6th - total 18) ahead of Sam Querrey , USA (single 22nd, double 31st - total 53) and John Isner , USA (single 19th, double 36th - total 55); Rafael Nadal was 10th in this ranking (single 1st, double 74th - total 75), Federer and Đoković were not among the top 100 in doubles at that time.
Melzer started the 2011 season in Kooyong at the AAMI Classic and achieved third place with a win over Nikolai Dawydenko. In Melbourne he made it to the round of 16. In doubles, he made it to the quarter-finals alongside Petzschner and was narrowly defeated by the Bryan brothers. Because of his points, Melzer made it into the top ten for the first time in his career; He is one of the not-too-large circle of players who have been in the top ten in singles and doubles at the same time in the course of their careers (the best in the Tennis Open Era was John McEnroe , in the early 1980s No. . 1 in singles and doubles).
At the tournament in Rotterdam Melzer failed in the last sixteen to Marin Čilić, but was able to win the double competition alongside Petzschner and thus secure his first title of the season. In April 2011, Melzer defeated Roger Federer 6: 4 and 6: 4 in the quarter-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters , but lost to David Ferrer 3: 6, 2: 6 in the semifinals . From April 18, 2011, he was listed as number 8 in the individual world rankings for eight weeks, the best individual placement of his career. In July 2011 Melzer won his second Grand Slam title with the mixed title at Wimbledon on the side of Iveta Benešová . His third followed in the same year at the side of Petzschner in the double competition of the US Open . From the middle of the year onwards, things didn't go so well in the individual, at the end of 2011 he had dropped to 33rd place in the world rankings.
2012 until today
2012 started in singles with defeats in Brisbane and at the Australian Open . The first big success of the year was the promotion to the quarterfinals of the world group with the Austrian Davis Cup team; In the 3-2 win over Russia in Wiener Neustadt, he contributed two of the three points through the individual games he won against Igor Kunizyn and Alex Bogomolov junior ; Andreas Haider-Maurer had already scored the third point in his first match against Alex Bogomolov junior . Shortly thereafter, Melzer won his first ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Memphis . This was followed by several setbacks: in the Davis Cup quarter-finals, the team clearly failed 4-1 to Spain ; until the end of July Melzer could never reach the third round of an individual competition except in Miami , he was eliminated from the French Open and Wimbledon in the first and second round. Finally he also lost his first round match at the Olympic Games against Marin Čilić, in the doubles competition he was eliminated with Alexander Peya in the round of 16. In doubles, the greatest successes were reaching the finals in Brisbane at the beginning of the year and the semi-finals at Wimbledon.
In 2013 Melzer reached the third round at the Australian Open and reached the finals in Zagreb in early February ; after that he took his best place in the world rankings for ten months with number 27. After an opening defeat in Memphis , where Melzer took up as the defending champion, however, he had to cope with a relapse to 49th place, his worst placement since August 2008. More defeats followed, whereupon Melzer competed at the Challenger tournament in Dallas , in which he was both singles - as well as the double competition (with Petzschner). This was followed by the quarter-finals at the Miami Masters , his best result so far at this tournament. Immediately before the US Open, he won the Winston-Salem tournament after having found a new coach in Galo Blanco . After the final triumph against Gaël Monfils , he again reached a season high with rank 27. Soon after, he had to end the season early because he sustained a shoulder injury. The injury forced Melzer to take a longer break.
He couldn't start the 2014 season until late. After five first round defeats, he fell out of the top 100 in the world rankings and became number three in Austria behind Dominic Thiem and Andreas Haider-Maurer . Towards the end of the year he still managed to achieve a top result: alongside Philipp Petzschner , he won the double competition of the tournament in the Wiener Stadthalle in October 2014. In the Davis Cup match against Latvia, he contributed two wins in singles to avoid relegation from Europe-Africa Zone I. On this occasion he became the Austrian with the most Davis Cup appearances : 65 - before that he had shared the record with Thomas Muster (63 appearances).
In 2015 he had to qualify at the Australian Open and then won his first round match before losing to Tomáš Berdych . In the Davis Cup he lost in early March in Europe-Africa Zone I against Sweden both his opening singles and doubles on the side of Alexander Peya; Austria won the game anyway, as the other three singles were all won - two by Andreas Haider-Maurer, the third, decisive, by his younger brother Gerald Melzer . At the French Open he got a starting place in the main field and, like in Melbourne, reached the second round; in Wimbledon he was eliminated in qualifying and fell back to 131st place in the world rankings. In the Davis Cup duel against the Netherlands , Melzer played doubles alongside Oliver Marach and lost against the Dutch pairing with the current Wimbledon winner Jean-Julien Rojer and Robin Haase . At the US Open he reached the second round of the main competition as a qualifier. After that he was unable to play a game because of a shoulder injury. In late September, he announced that he had a damaged labrum . Since the conservative healing measures did not work, Melzer underwent an operation at the end of November.
On June 11, 2016 Melzer made his comeback in qualifying for the Challenger tournament in Poprad . After winning the opening game, he stopped because of renewed pain in the operated shoulder. At the beginning of July, Melzer played for the German club HTC Blau-Weiß Krefeld in the Bundesliga, just like in previous years . In the Davis Cup Melzer won against Ukraine in doubles (in three sets) and then in singles against Ilya Martschenko (in five sets). He received a wild card for the ATP tournament in Kitzbühel . He reached the quarter-finals after defeating Dominic Thiem , now Austrian number one, among others . There he was finally defeated by his brother in three sentences.
In 2017 Melzer made it through the qualification in the main competition of the Australian Open and lost despite winning the set against the eventual winner Roger Federer. He also had to qualify for Wimbledon , but lost in the first qualifying round. He then announced that he was suffering from an elbow injury and that he would not be able to participate in a tennis tournament for an indefinite period.
Racketlon
After Melzer had already participated in the Australian Open in Racketlon in 2007, he announced his participation in the home European championships in doubles with his partner Christoph Krenn on August 24, 2017. Melzer played with his right hand in this tournament, however, because his left hitting arm is still injured and in order not to lose his protected ranking for tennis. They reached the semifinals.
supervisor
In mid-May 2007, Melzer separated from his trainer Karl-Heinz Wetter. Up to the US Open in the same year he worked first with Gilbert Schaller , then with the former number 7 in the world, Joakim Nyström from Sweden. Melzer's manager is Ronnie Leitgeb . His team also includes Jan Veldhuis (physiotherapist and conditioning trainer) and Michael Buchleitner (conditioning trainer ). Alexander Waske was Melzer's trainer from late 2012 to mid-2013 . After that, Galo Blanco was his trainer. He is currently being trained by Werner Eschauer .
Personal
His father Rudolf Melzer ( SPÖ ) was mayor of Deutsch-Wagram from 1998 to 2001 . His mother Michaela Melzer is an employee, his younger brother Gerald is also a tennis professional.
Jürgen Melzer was married to the Czech tennis player Iveta Benešová on September 14, 2012 . The wedding took place at Laxenburg Castle. The marriage was divorced in March 2015. After separating from his wife Iveta, he entered into a relationship with former swimmer Fabienne Nadarajah that same year . In March 2017, the couple, who got married in September 2016, became parents of a son.
