The defending champion in the singles was the two-time American John Isner , who was previously unbeaten in Winston-Salem . Both Isner and last year's finalist Tomáš Berdych retired due to injuries before the tournament started. The Austrian Jürgen Melzer won the tournament by beating Gaël Monfils from France in the final .
The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 48 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The 16 top seeded players each received a bye into the second round.
Qualification for the Winston-Salem Open 2013 took place on August 17th and 18th, 2013. Four qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament.
At the Winston-Salem Open 2013 the following prize money and world ranking points were paid out or credited for reaching the respective round. Players who entered the main field from qualification received the specified qualification points in addition to those for reaching the respective round.
