life and career

2005–2008: Successes as a junior and first world ranking points

As a junior, Guillaume Rufin won the French championships in their respective age groups in 2005, 2006 and 2007. He has also competed in international junior tournaments since 2006, where he won several titles in 2007 and 2008. As a result, he rose to 6th place in the junior world rankings. Since 2006, Guillaume Rufin has also competed in men's future tournaments. In April 2008 he was able to win a match for the first time and thus collect his first world ranking points. At the French Open 2008 he got a wildcard for qualification, but failed in the first round.

2009: Future tournament victories, Grand Slam debut and first Challenger title

In February 2009 Rufin won his first Future title. The next title followed in April 2009, followed by participation in the finals in May 2009. He then received a wildcard for the main draw at the French Open . There he was able to prevail in his first Grand Slam match a day before his 19th birthday against the top 100 player Eduardo Schwank in three sets , before he was eliminated in the second round against Jürgen Melzer, who was in 24th position . In the following months, Guillaume Rufin reached two more future finals, one of which he was able to win. He also played more tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour and was able to reach two quarter-finals there. The highlight of his career so far followed in October 2009: At the Challenger tournament in Florianópolis , he first defeated the top 100 player Marcos Daniel , who was in first place, and then played his way to the final without losing a set, where he against in three sets Pere Riba won the title. Rufin finished the year at number 171 in the world rankings and had thus improved by almost 900 places within one year.

2010: First ATP quarter-finals, injury concerns

The year 2010 began for Guillaume Rufin with a successful qualification at the Australian Open , followed by a first round defeat against Bernard Tomic . In February 2010 Rufin got a wild card for the ATP tournament in Marseille , and after victories over Laurent Recouderc and Yannick Mertens he was able to reach the quarterfinals, where he lost to Mischa Zverev . In the world rankings, he then achieved his best position to date with 139th place, but then had to take a three-month break with a hip injury. At the French Open he could not qualify in singles, but got a wildcard in doubles together with Alexandre Sidorenko . After beating 13th place Mardy Fish and Mark Knowles in the second round , they almost achieved a sensation in the round of 16: They won the first set against 2nd place Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić , but ultimately lost in three sets against the eventual tournament winners. The next highlight of the year was the US Open , for which Rufin received a wildcard. In the first round he defeated the top 100 player Leonardo Mayer in four sets, but then lost to Paul-Henri Mathieu in three tight sets . In September 2010 Guillaume Rufin was able to qualify again for an ATP tournament in Bucharest , but had no chance against Jérémy Chardy in the first main round . On the Challenger Tour he could not win a title this year; his best result was a semifinal participation. In December 2010, Guillaume Rufin had to undergo surgery on his hip due to persistent problems and was therefore out for a long time.

2011–2015: Comeback and end of career

In March 2011 Guillaume Rufin celebrated his comeback at a future tournament in Spain after a break of more than four months. In April 2011 he won two future titles in a row in Chile. At the ATP tournament in Nice Rufin succeeded in qualifying in May 2011, but he was eliminated in the first round against Pere Riba . For the French Open he got a wildcard like two years before and won his first round match against the top 100 player Adrian Mannarino in three straight sets. In the second round he was able to win a set against the later quarter-finalist Gaël Monfils , who was placed in 9th position , but ultimately lost the match in four sets. At Wimbledon he was eliminated from qualifying just like at the US Open . Otherwise he played almost exclusively Challenger tournaments and a future tournament, which he was able to win, in the further course of the year.

Rufin at the Australian Open 2013

After he was eliminated again in the qualification at the 2012 Australian Open , Guillaume Rufin received a wildcard for the ATP tournament in Montpellier in early February 2012. After a first round victory over Vasek Pospisil , Rufin was able to win in the round of 16 in two sets against Feliciano López , who was fifth . In the quarter-finals he met his compatriot Gilles Simon , who was in second position , and was eliminated after three contested sets. Nevertheless, after this success, he climbed back into the top 200 of the world rankings for the first time since October 2010.

In 2015 he played his last professional tournament and has since worked as a hitting partner for various tennis players.
