Vasek Pospisil (born June 23, 1990 in Vernon ) is a Canadian tennis player . He is a member of the Canadian Davis Cup team .

Tennis career

Beginnings

Due to the fact that his father Milos Pospisil was a tennis teacher, he came into contact with the sport for the first time at the age of 5. In 2005 he was in the final of the Canadian U18 ITF World Ranking Event for the first time and won the doubles final there with his partner Graeme Kassautzki. In the singles he was also in the final, but lost his game against his doubles partner. This was followed by further victories on the Junior Tour, for example he won the 2007 ITF Indoor McDonalds Flevoland Junior Championships in Almere , the U18 Outdoor Nationals in St-Bruno-de-Montarville and the All Canadian ITF Junior Championships in Burlington .

Start of professional career (2007-2011)

His first attempts on the higher endowed ATP Challenger Tour were three tournaments in 2007, in which, however, he never got past the first round. In 2008 and 2009 he continued to play mainly Challenger and Future tournaments. He played his first tournament on the ATP World Tour at the Canada Masters 2008, but did not succeed in making it into the main table of the tournament. He was clearly defeated by Donald Young in the first qualifying round with 1: 6, 2: 6. By the end of the year he was able to make up a good 400 places in the world rankings and was 1087th place. Also in 2009 he did not qualify for the main round. Due to consistently good results in futures and challenger tournaments, including 4 wins in futures tournaments, he made a giant leap in the world rankings and finished in 339th place at the end of 2009. In 2010, in addition to qualifying for the Canada Masters, he also took part in the qualification of the Gerry Weber Open . There was no sensation at either tournament. He was still unable to advance into the main round of an ATP World Tour tournament. His first big success followed a year later. At the US Open 2012 he surprisingly succeeded in qualifying for the tournament, where he met the Czech Lukáš Rosol in the first round and clearly defeated him 6: 1, 6: 2, 6: 1. In the second round he met the number 25 seeded Spaniard Feliciano López , against whom he ultimately had to leave the field as a loser. At the Masters 1000 tournament in Montreal , he received a wild card from the tournament management and thereby fulfilled his wish to take part in this tournament after he had already failed three times in the qualifying round. He won his first round game against the Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the second round there was the first meeting with the long-time number 1 Roger Federer . After he was able to keep up in the first set, his strength decreased in the second set, so that he lost the game 5: 7, 3: 6. Further ATP tournaments followed in St. Petersburg , where he was eliminated in the first round against Andreas Seppi , and in Valencia , where he surprisingly defeated the much better placed American John Isner and advanced into the second round. There he lost his match against the Spaniard David Ferrer in straight sets. At the end of the year he was in position 119 in the world rankings, which was his best result to date.

Entry into the top 100 and first Masters semifinals (2012-2013)

After successfully qualifying for the ATP 250 tournament in Chennai , he faced the German Andreas Beck in the first round . He lost the game in straight sets 3-6, 6-7 8 . This was followed by qualification for the Australian Open 2012 , in which he failed in the second qualifying round to Carsten Ball . After the Challenger tournament in Heilbronn , where it reached the quarter-finals, the ATP tournament in Montpellier followed . In the first round he lost to local hero Guillaume Rufin . The first round of the Davis Cup 2012 against France followed in February , where he played two individual games against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gaël Monfils . He couldn't prevent the Canadians from being eliminated in the first round as he lost both of his games. This was followed by qualifications for the Memphis and Delray Beach tournaments . He did not succeed in both tournaments to advance into the main field. A week later he made the qualification at the Indian Wells Masters and competed in the first round against the French Nicolas Mahut , against whom he was clearly eliminated with 3: 6 and 2: 6. Over the course of the season he repeatedly qualified for the main fields of ATP tournaments, but was usually eliminated early. Shortly after his first Rimouski , Pospisil moved into the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time on April 2, 2012, but quickly fell out again and lost a few rankings. In July 2012 he celebrated his second Challenger title in Granby , after beating Igor Sijsling in the final, and was once again among the top 100 tennis players. He finally ended the year at position 125 in the world rankings.

After a rather modest start to the 2013 season, he won his third Challenger title in Johannesburg in May after profiting from the abandonment of his opponent Michał Przysiężny in the final . In August he won again at this level at the tournament in Vancouver . A week later he drew attention to himself when he reached the semi-finals at the Canada Masters in Montreal and only just lost it in three sets against his compatriot Milos Raonic . With this success he made up 31 places in the world rankings and was on position 40 on August 12, 2013, which also meant his best position to date. In the semi-finals of the Davis Cup against the Serbian Davis Cup team , he lost his two individual games and ultimately retired with his team with a final result of 2: 3 from the competition. In October he reached a semi-final of an ATP tournament in Basel , which he lost to local hero Roger Federer in three sets. At the end of the year he was 32nd in the individual ranking.

Victory at the Wimbledon Championships in doubles (since 2014)

Pospisil started the 2014 season by reaching the semi-finals in Chennai , which he lost to Stanislas Wawrinka . Then he took part in the Australian Open for the first time, where he immediately reached the third round, but could not compete there due to an injury. After that, he couldn't win a single game in the next eight tournaments. Only in June did he find his way back to victory at the lawn tournament in Queen’s , when he defeated Paolo Lorenzi in the first round , but was eliminated in the second round. At the French Open and Wimbledon , he also did not get past the first round. In the double competition at Wimbledon , he then celebrated his greatest success to date on the ATP World Tour. At the side of Jack Sock he reached the final, which they won against the American brothers and fifteen-time Grand Slam winners Bob and Mike Bryan in five sets. Shortly afterwards he won the doubles competition in Atlanta with Jack Sock . He reached his first single ATP final in early August in Washington . In the first all-Canadian final in ATP history against Milos Raonic , however, he remained largely without a chance with 1: 6 and 4: 6.

With Jack Sock followed another final participation in a doubles competition in Cincinnati , in which they clearly defeated Bob and Mike Bryan in two sets. With Julien Benneteau he reached his fourth double final in Beijing in October . You were defeated in three sentences. In the same month he won the tournament in Basel with Nenad Zimonjić . In the world rankings he reached a new career high with 13th place in the double ranking.
