The Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011 was a tennis tournament that took place from October 9th to 16th, 2011 in Shanghai . It was part of the 2011 ATP World Tour and was played outdoors on hard courts. This season it was the eighth of nine tournaments in the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 category .

Andy Murray was able to defend his title by beating David Ferrer in the final . After the triumphs in Bangkok and Tokyo, this was his third individual title within three weeks, which improved him by one position to third in the world rankings . In the 2011 season it was his fifth individual title, and overall the 21st ATP title of his career. Since he had already won the Masters tournament in Cincinnati in August 2011 , he is the only player next to Novak Đoković, who did not appear in Shanghai due to injury , who was able to win two or more Masters tournaments in 2011. The biggest surprises of the tournament were Florian Mayer's two-set win over world number two, Rafael Nadal, and the semi-finals of Kei Nishikori , who among other things defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga , who was fourth , and made it into the top 30 of the world rankings for the first time.

Jürgen Melzer and Leander Paes were the defending champions in doubles , but this year they both competed with different partners. While Melzer and Philipp Petzschner were eliminated in the second round, Paes reached the semi-finals alongside Mahesh Bhupathi , where they were defeated by the eventual winners Max Mirny and Daniel Nestor . They fended off two match points in the final against Michaël Llodra and Nenad Zimonjić , before they finally used their first match point themselves and thus won their third joint title this season. For Mirny this was the 40th ATP double title of his career, for Nestor it was even title number 74.

The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 56 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 24 pairs. The eight top seeded players in singles or pairings in doubles each got a bye into the second round. The total prize pool was $ 3,240,000; total financial liabilities were $ 5,250,000.
