Milos Raonic (born December 27, 1990 in Titograd , SR Montenegro , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Canadian tennis player .

life and career

Career and first successes as a junior

Milos Raonic moved with his parents from Montenegro to Canada in 1994 when he was three. He started playing tennis at the age of eight, initially training with a ball machine early in the morning or late in the evening for cost reasons . At the age of twelve he took part in an international junior tournament in Canada for the first time. In 2006 and 2007 he won several tournaments and in October 2008 he achieved 35th place in the junior world rankings.

2007 to 2009: Future tournaments and first ATP tournament

From 2007 Raonic took part in Future tournaments of the ITF , since then he has been in the world rankings . In March 2008 he was in a final for the first time and in March 2009 he won his first title. In the same year he reached two more finals, one of which he was able to win. In August 2009, he also qualified for an ATP tournament for the first time at the Masters tournament in Montreal by defeating the top 100 player Teimuras Gabashvili and Michaël Llodra . In the first main round he had a match point against the top 10 player Fernando González in the tie-break of the second set, but then lost the game in three sets. Due to his success, Raonic made it into the top 400 in the ranking.

2010: Establishment on the Challenger Tour and first ATP victories

In March 2010 he played for Canada for the first time in the Davis Cup against Colombia . He lost both singles, but was able to win the doubles alongside Daniel Nestor . In the weeks that followed, Raonic reached three Future finals and won two titles. In July 2010 he was in a Challenger final in Granby for the first time , in which he was defeated by top seed Tobias Kamke in two sets. Two weeks later he failed at the Canada Masters in Toronto with a wildcard in the first round in straight sets to Victor Hănescu . However, he and his compatriot Vasek Pospisil were able to draw attention to themselves in doubles when they defeated Rafael Nadal and Novak Đoković , who at that time occupied places 1 and 2 in the individual world rankings, in three sets. Raonic then qualified straight away at the US Open for his first Grand Slam tournament . In the first main round, however, he failed in four sets against Carsten Ball . In October 2010 Raonic was able to celebrate his first victory in an ATP tournament as a qualifier in Kuala Lumpur against Igor Kunizyn . This was followed by a victory over the top 40 player Serhij Stachowskyj , before he lost to Igor Andreyev in three sets in the quarterfinals . The following week he again qualified for an ATP tournament in Tokyo ; again he was able to defeat a top 100 player in the first main round with Florent Serra before failing in two tight sets on world number one Nadal. Because of these successes, he improved to 155th place in the world rankings.

2011: Breakthrough at the Australian Open, first ATP title and injury concerns

The year 2011 began for Raonic with the successful qualification at the Australian Open . In the first main round he won his first Grand Slam match against Björn Phau in three sets . He was also victorious in the second and third round, eliminating two seeded players, Michaël Llodra and the top 10 player Michail Juschny . His winning streak ended in the round of 16 against the later semi-finalist David Ferrer , who was placed in 7th position . Nevertheless, it made it into the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time. After a second round defeat at the ATP tournament in Johannesburg , Raonic defeated another top 50 player with Xavier Malisse at the ATP tournament in San José . He also prevailed against former world number four James Blake and against Ričardas Berankis . Since his next opponent Gaël Monfils could not compete due to a wrist injury, Raonic reached the final without a fight. There he defeated defending champion Fernando Verdasco in a close two-set match without a single break and won his first ATP title. Just three days after the triumph, he met Verdasco again with a wildcard in the first round of the Memphis ATP tournament - and again Raonic had the upper hand in a close three -set match . After further three-set wins over Radek Štěpánek , Robert Kendrick and Mardy Fish , who was placed in 4th position , he reached the final again, where he met Andy Roddick , who was placed in 1st position . Again the match went the full distance, and although Raonic hit over 30 aces for the second time in the tournament, he lost just short of the favorite in the end. Within just one month, he improved by over 100 places to 37th in the world rankings.

Milos Raonic at the Australian Open 2011

In the Davis Cup game in Mexico, which was played on clay court at the beginning of March 2011, Raonic made a significant contribution to Canada's 4-1 victory with two individual wins and a double success (with Vasek Pospisil ). Two weeks later he moved into the third round of a Masters tournament for the first time in Indian Wells with another victory over Mardy Fish , but was defeated there in a close match of three to 18-year-old Ryan Harrison . In April 2011 Raonic reached the third round of a clay court tournament for the first time at the Masters of Monte Carlo ; against the later finalist David Ferrer, however, as at the Australian Open, he had no chance. He also reached the third round at the following clay court tournament in Barcelona . In Estoril he was then after a three-set win over Gilles Simon for the first time in the semifinals of a clay court tournament. There he met Verdasco for the third time this season, but had to retire after losing the first set due to back problems. Then he began his preparation for Wimbledon at the lawn tournament in Halle , where he was defeated in the quarterfinals by the later finalist Philipp Petzschner .

In his second round match against Gilles Müller at Wimbledon , he suffered a hip injury in a fall that made an operation necessary. He then had to take a break for several months and missed the Rogers Cup in his native Canada and the US Open . He finally celebrated his comeback in the Davis Cup game against Israel in mid-September 2011. Despite its defeat by Amir Weintraub , Canada made it back into the world group with a 3-2 win for the first time in eight years. In the final weeks of the 2011 season, Raonic played five more ATP tournaments. He achieved his best result in October 2011 in Stockholm , where he failed in the semifinals in three sets against eventual tournament winner Gaël Monfils. He finished his best season so far in spite of an almost three-month injury break in 31st place in the world rankings.

Since 2012: Further ATP titles and advance into the top ten

2012 began for Raonic in Chennai , where he made it to the final without losing a set. There he met the top seeded Janko Tipsarević , against whom he narrowly prevailed in a match without a single break and won the title. Raonic never gave up his serve in the entire tournament; Roger Federer last achieved this when he won the title in Halle in 2008 . At the Australian Open , he was eliminated in the third round against local hero Lleyton Hewitt . In early February Raonic won his first individual against Julien Benneteau in the Davis Cup match against France , but he had to cancel his second against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga due to injury; so he could not prevent the 1: 4 defeat of Canada. Despite the injury, he traveled on to San José to defend his title there. Raonic won all four games without losing a set and with a final victory over Denis Istomin his second title of the 2012 season. Just a week later, he reached the final in Memphis as in the previous year, but lost again to Jürgen Melzer after two close sets from the place.

Raonic 2016 at Wimbledon with the prize for runner-up

At the first Masters tournament of the season in Indian Wells , Raonic met third-placed Federer in the third round. He won the first set, but lost against the eventual winner in three sets. In April 2012 he defeated in Barcelona with Andy Murray for the first time a player out of the top four before the semi-finals in straight sets against David Ferrer lost. In Madrid there was then another clash with Federer, and again Raonic had to admit defeat to the eventual tournament winner in three sets.

Raonic started the 2013 season with a round of 16 defeat against Grigor Dimitrov in ATP Brisbane . At the Australian Open he reached the second round after 2011, which he lost to Federer in three sets. With his two victories against the Spaniards Albert Ramos and Guillermo García-López in the first round encounter of the Davis Cup , he played a major role in the quarter-finals. In San José he was able to defend his title with a final win against Tommy Haas . In April, the Davis Cup quarter-finals against Italy were up, where he played his team in the semi-finals with two recent wins in singles, which they then lost to Serbia.

From May to June Raonic could not achieve any great success, he failed several times already in the starting round. In August he got back to his form when he reached the finals of a Masters tournament for the first time at the Canada Masters in Montreal . Despite a significant defeat against Rafael Nadal , he was in the top ten of the world rankings for the first time on August 12, 2013.

In September he won his fifth title on the ATP World Tour when he defeated the top seeded Tomáš Berdych in straight sets in the final of the Thailand Open . A week later he also reached the final of the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo , which he lost to Juan Martín del Potro in straight sets. Due to Andy Murray's cancellation for the ATP World Tour Finals in London, Raonic was given a reserve position. However, it was not used. At the end of the year he was number 11 in the world rankings.

particularities

With his triumph in San José in February 2011, Raonic was the first Canadian since Greg Rusedski to win an ATP tournament again. Rusedski, who later played for Great Britain , celebrated his last title under the Canadian flag in Seoul in April 1995 . At the same time, Raonic was also the youngest player since Marin Čilić to win an ATP title; he was 20 years and 1 month old at the time of his victory, while Čilić was 19 years and 10 months old in his August 2008 triumph in New Haven . After participating in the final in Memphis a week later, Raonic also reached rank 37 in the ATP world rankings , making him the best-placed Canadian of all time. The old record was also set by Greg Rusedski in May 1995 with 47th place (he later improved as a Briton to 4th place).

In 2012, Raonic was the second strongest server of the season with a total of 1002 aces in 65 games, only John Isner had hit more aces with 1005.

Awards

In 2013 and 2014, he was named Canada's Sportsman of the Year with the Lionel Conacher Award .
