The Internazionali BNL d'Italia 2008 was a tennis tournament that took place in Rome from May 5th to 11th, 2008 . It was part of the ATP Tour 2008 and was played outdoors on a clay court. This season it was the fourth of nine tournaments in the ATP Masters Series category . No other ATP Tour tournaments took place in the same week. Following the Masters in Rome, another Masters Series tournament took place in Hamburg on May 12th .
The defending champion in the singles was the Spaniard Rafael Nadal , who surprisingly knocked out Juan Carlos Ferrero in the second round as second in the seed list . That was only Nadal's second loss in 105 games on clay. The semi-finals of the individual competition contained a novelty. Both Andy Roddick and Radek Štěpánek had to give up their matches against Novak Đoković and Stanislas Wawrinka, respectively . This had never happened before in the history of the ATP Masters. In the final, Đoković won 4: 6, 6: 3, 6: 3 against Wawrinka in three sets, securing his third title of the year after the Australian Open and the Masters in Indian Wells . In doubles, Fabrice Santoro and Nenad Zimonjić were last year's winners, who competed with other partners and failed in the semi-finals and the final. The final decided the twins Bob and Mike Bryan 3: 6, 6: 4, [10: 8] against Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić for themselves. That was the 47th joint title of the Bryan twins.
The field of participants in the single competition consisted of 56 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 24 pairs. The eight top seeded players in singles or pairings in doubles each received a bye into the second round. The total prize money was 2,057,000 euros, the total financial liabilities were 2,270,000 euros.
The qualification took place on May 3rd and 4th, 2008. Seven qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament.
The following prize money and world ranking points were paid out or credited for reaching the respective round. Players who entered the main field from qualification received the specified qualification points in addition to those for reaching the respective round. Otherwise the amounts are not to be understood as cumulative. The prize money for the double competition was valid for each team.
