At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , 4 tennis competitions were held, in men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles and women's doubles. The competitions took place from August 10th to 17th, 2008. The venue was the Olympic Green Tennis Center . In the facility, the DecoTurf hard court was played.
Like the tournaments of the ATP Tour and the WTA Tour, the Olympic tournament was played in the knockout process from the first round. In contrast to the tournaments of the tennis associations, the losers of the semifinals played a game for the bronze medal at the Olympic Games.
Qualification criteria
A National Olympic Committee (NOK) could nominate up to six men and six women for the Olympic tennis tournament. In the individual competitions, the number of athletes was limited to 64 each. No more than four athletes from one NOK were allowed to compete. 32 couples took part in each of the double competitions. The maximum number of participants per NOK was two couples. Individual athletes could compete in both individual tournaments and doubles.
The qualification rules provided for the nomination of 48 athletes in each individual tournament on the basis of the tennis world ranking of June 9, 2008. Four weeks later, on July 2nd, 2008, another eight starting places were awarded based on the world rankings. In addition, there were six starting places for continental representatives. As early as March 31, 2008, the World Tennis Federation (ITF) had given the four players Komlavi Loglo , Rafael Arévalo (both men), Cara Black and Stephanie Vogt (both women) invitations for the tournament.
On June 9, 2008, ten couples were nominated for the two double tournaments based on their world rankings. On July 2, 2008, the field was filled in taking into account the qualifications for the individual tournaments and continental aspects.
