Career

Aljona is the older sister of tennis player Kateryna Bondarenko (also the eldest of the sisters, Valerija Bondarenko , was a professional tennis player; she ended her career in 2008).

Aljona Bondarenko became a professional player in 1999. She made her debut at a Grand Slam tournament in 2005 at the Australian Open .

She won her first individual title on the WTA Tour in 2006 in Luxembourg at the FORTIS Championships . At her first tournament in 2010 she won her second title on the tour. In the final of the Moorilla Hobart International she defeated the number 4 of the tournament, the second seeded Shahar Peer 6: 2, 6: 4.

At the side of her sister Kateryna, she won her only Grand Slam title in 2008 when they won the doubles competition at the Australian Open with a final victory over the pairing Asaranka / Peer.

Aljona Bondarenko played a total of 34 games for the Ukrainian Fed Cup team from 2002 to 2010, of which she won 22.

She also competed for the Ukraine at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. In the individual, she lost in the second round to Jelena Janković (who started for Serbia) 5: 7, 1: 6. In doubles, she and her sister were defeated by the pairing Yan Zi / Zheng Jie from China in the bronze medal match with 2: 6, 2: 6.

At the WTA tournament in Moscow in October 2011, Aljona Bondarenko had her last appearance on the tour for the time being. Her sister returned to the courts in spring 2014 after taking a baby break.
