She started playing tennis at the age of ten because she wanted to emulate her older sister. In 2003 she became a professional player and by the end of the year she was already in the top 100 . On the WTA Tour she was able to celebrate four singles and 15 doubles. From 2002 to 2012 she played intermittently for the Chinese Fed Cup team ; their record shows 22 wins out of nine losses. She worked for the Chinese Olympic team in Athens in 2004 and in Beijing in 2008 .
Her greatest successes include the Grand Slam titles in doubles in Melbourne and in Wimbledon in 2006 , both alongside her compatriot Yan Zi , with whom she won a total of eleven titles.
In 2008, in the third round of Wimbledon, she defeated world number one Ana Ivanović 6-1 and 6-4, after which she made it to the semi-finals. In 2010 she reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne again.
In May 2009 Zheng reached her best position in the single world rankings with rank 15 , in 2006 she was number 3 in the world in doubles.
The year 2011 began with cancellations due to injuries, including for Melbourne; first round defeats followed. In May Zheng won the clay court tournament in Rome alongside her compatriot Peng Shuai . At the French Open as in Wimbledon, the end came in round two. On January 8, 2012, she won an individual title on the tour in Auckland after more than five years. After she had defeated number 3 seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova in the semifinals , she benefited in the final from the fact that number 4 seeded Flavia Pennetta had to retire in the third set.
In Melbourne in 2013 she promoted the favored Samantha Stosur in the second round from their "home tournament". The week before she had defeated Stosur in Sydney in round one, also in three sets. In 2014 she was in the final of the 's-Hertogenbosch grass tournament , which she lost to Coco Vandeweghe 2: 6 and 4: 6.
Zheng Jie has not competed on the women's tour since the 2015 Wimbledon tournament . In spring 2016 she became the mother of a daughter.
