The WTA Tour 2008 (officially: Sony Ericsson WTA Tour 2008 ) was the 38th year of the tournament series in women 's tennis, which is hosted by the Women's Tennis Association . It comprises tournaments of different classes, so-called 'Tiers': Tier I, II, III and IV, where I is the highest and IV the lowest. ITF tournaments are not part of the WTA Tour, but the ranking points won there are still counted for the WTA world rankings.

The team competitions Hopman Cup and Fed Cup are also not organized by the WTA, but by the ITF . They are listed here as the top female players usually play these tournaments.

Here is an overview of the WTA tournaments in 2008, including information on location, category and winners.

classification

WTA tier classes
class Number of
tournaments
minimal prize money
Tier I. 10 $ 1,340,000
Tier II 15th $ 600,000
Tier III 17th $ 175,000
Tier IV 16 $ 145,000

The tournaments of the WTA Tour are divided into five categories (see above). Above that are only the WTA Tour Championships , the final tennis tournament of the year.

In the tier tournaments, world ranking points are awarded depending on the class of the tournament and the number of participating players . More important than the tier tournaments are the four Grand Slam tournaments organized by the ITF .

Below the tier tournaments, the ITF organizes other tournaments that are also relevant to the world rankings.
