Mashona Washington (born May 31, 1976 in Flint , Michigan ) is a former American tennis player .
Career
Mashona Washington began playing tennis at the age of four, initially under the guidance of her father William. She is the youngest of five children, her brother MaliVai Washington was also a professional tennis player.
She made her professional debut in January 1995 and has now been coached by Lillian Rios. In 2001 she won the ITF tournament in Albuquerque , then in 2002 her first match in a Grand Slam tournament , when she defeated the Spanish Gala León García in the first round of the US Open ; then she was defeated by Kim Clijsters .
In 2004 she defeated the world-class player Maria Sharapova 6: 3, 2: 6 and 6: 2. In addition, she was at the Japan Open for the first time in the final of a WTA tournament, in which she drew the short straw against Sharapova this time. In the same year she achieved her best position in the world rankings in individual with rank 50 . In 2005 she achieved her best result in a Grand Slam tournament by reaching the third round at Wimbledon ; she lost the game against Jelena Dementjewa 5: 7 and 1: 6.
When the US Fed Cup team met in Belgium in July 2006, she suffered a knee injury that put her out of action for over a year. In May 2008, she won the $ 50,000 tournament in Carson, California , securing the third USTA Pro Circuit title of her career.
Her last appearance in professional tennis was in November 2011 at an ITF tournament in Phoenix, Arizona.
