Venus Ebony Starr Williams (born June 17, 1980 in Lynwood , California ) is an American tennis player .

In her professional career, Venus Williams has already won 49 singles titles, including seven in Grand Slam tournaments , as well as the gold medal at the Olympic Games in 2000. In doubles, she and her sister Serena have celebrated 24 tournament victories so far, 14 of them at Grand Slam tournaments . Slam tournaments and three at Olympic Games (2000, 2008 & 2012). She won two other Grand Slam titles in mixed alongside Justin Gimelstob (both in 1998).

biography

Venus is the daughter of Richard and Oracene Williams. The five Williams sisters moved to Compton , California as children . The parents wanted at least one of their daughters to establish themselves among the world's best in tennis. Venus actually developed into one of the best tennis players in California while she was still in school. She later took turns at the helm with her sister Serena.

Career

Before 2002

Venus Williams became a professional player in 1994. She played her first WTA tournament at the age of 14 in Stanford . In 1997 she reached the final of the US Open , in which she was defeated by Martina Hingis . In 1998 she won the Australian Open and the French Open in mixed alongside Justin Gimelstob .

In 1999 she was defeated by Steffi Graf, who was about to retire, in the "rain battle" at Wimbledon in the quarter-finals with 2: 6, 6: 3 and 4: 6.

In 2000, in addition to the titles at the Grand Slam tournaments in Wimbledon and New York, she also won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Sydney in singles and doubles (with sister Serena). In 2001 she repeated her successes at Wimbledon and at the US Open.

2002-2003

On February 25, 2002, Venus topped the WTA world rankings for the first time . She reached the final four times in a row at Grand Slam tournaments, in which she was subject to her sister. In 2003 she moved into the final of Wimbledon again and lost again to Serena. In total, she was at the top of the world rankings for eleven weeks.

2005-2006

Venus Williams (2006)

On July 2, 2005, she defeated Lindsay Davenport 4: 6, 7: 6, 4 , 9: 7 in the longest Wimbledon final of all time , thus securing her fifth individual Grand Slam title. In addition, she won the tournament in Istanbul in May with a 6: 3, 6: 1 final victory over Nicole Vaidišová .

A curiosity took place with Venus' participation in May 2005 - a tennis match with the Turkish Grand Slam participant İpek Şenoğlu on the Bosphorus Bridge , which connects Europe and Asia. It was the first competition that was held on two continents at the same time.

In 2006 Venus Williams, who like her sister Serena has suffered from injuries for many years and often has to take a break for many months, only played six tournaments. In Warsaw and at the French Open she reached the quarter-finals, in Rome she was eliminated in the semifinals. At the French Open, she lost to Nicole Vaidišová, whom she had clearly defeated in the Istanbul final the year before. She had to cancel the US Open. In Luxembourg she was eliminated by Agnieszka Radwańska with pain in both wrists. Due to the small number of tournaments played, it was only number 48 in the world at the end of the season.

2007

She also had to cancel the first Grand Slam tournament in 2007 due to injury. On February 19, she made her comeback at the WTA tournament in Memphis , where she won the title straight away (clear final win over Shahar Peer ). In July, she surprisingly triumphed for the fourth time at Wimbledon. On the way there she defeated Marija Sharapowa and Ana Ivanović , among others , in the final she defeated Marion Bartoli 6: 4 and 6: 1. After another injury, she made a successful comeback at the US Open. She reached the semi-finals with victories over Aljona Bondarenko, Ana Ivanović and Jelena Janković , in which she lost in two sets - like her sister Serena Williams a round earlier - against world number one Justine Henin . She then won the Seoul tournament with a final victory over Marija Kirilenko .

2008

After a varied first half of the season, Venus Williams won her seventh Grand Slam title in Wimbledon without losing a set and her fifth title at Wimbledon. In the final, she beat Serena 7: 5 and 6: 4 - it was the first victory in a Grand Slam final against her sister since the 2001 US Open . In addition, the Williams sisters prevailed together in the double competition. They also reached the final without losing a set, beating Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur 6: 2 and 6: 2. In October Venus won the tournament in Zurich , defeating Ana Ivanović in the semi-finals and Flavia Pennetta in the final . At the end of the year in Doha she reached the final of the WTA Tour Championships with victories over Dinara Safina , Serena Williams, Jelena Dementjewa and Jelena Janković . There she defeated Vera Swonarewa with 6: 7, 6: 0 and 6: 2. In addition, the Williams sisters won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, as they did in Sydney in 2000.

2009

At the Australian Open , Venus Williams and her sister Serena won the women's doubles. In the singles she was defeated by Carla Suárez Navarro 6: 2, 3: 6, 5: 7 in the second round after a match point was awarded in a 5: 2 lead in the third set . In the previous round, she prevailed 6: 3, 6: 3 against Angelique Kerber .

In Dubai she won her 40th tournament victory in the individual with a clear 6: 4, 6: 2 in the final over Virginie Razzano . Before that she had defeated Alizé Cornet 6: 3, 6: 2 and Anastassija Pawljutschenkowa 6: 0, 6: 1 as well as Jelena Dementjewa in the quarterfinals 6: 3, 6: 3 and in the semifinals against Serena - at that time world number one - with 6 : 1, 2: 6, 7: 6 enforced.

At Wimbledon, she lost to her sister in two sets as the defending champion in the final. In the semifinals, she had previously defeated world number one Dinara Safina 6: 1, 6: 0 - one of the clearest defeats with which a number 1 in the world has ever left the place. With her sister, however, she defended the double title against Rennae Stubbs and Samantha Stosur, it was already their ninth joint title at a Grand Slam tournament. In Stanford, Venus played his way to the finals in singles and on the way was able to shine with victories over Sharapova and Dementjewa. In the final, she was surprisingly defeated by Marion Bartoli. With her sister, she played again for the first time in a tournament outside of the Grand Slam series - they won the double title with ease.

2009 at the US Open

At the US Open she reached the round of 16 after victories over Duschewina, Mattek-Sands and Rybariková and had to compete there against the returned Kim Clijsters. After a strange match between the two, Venus left the field as the loser (0: 6, 6: 0 and 4: 6). In doubles with her sister, she played much more successfully. Placed at number 4, they won the title with a final victory over the best women's doubles at the time, consisting of Cara Black from Zimbabwe and the American Liezel Huber .

Although it didn't go so well in between and she lost twice to Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova within a week (previously only Lindsay Davenport had beaten her twice in two weeks), she was still able to qualify for the WTA Tour Championships . As the defending champion she was in a group with her sister Serena and Jelena Dementjewa and Svetlana Kuznetsova. Venus could only win against Kuznetsova, but she still reached the semifinals. There she met Jelena Janković, against whom she had the upper hand with 5: 7, 6: 3 and 6: 4. In the final she met her sister again and had to admit defeat 2: 6, 6: 7. In doubles, the Williams sisters were eliminated in the semi-finals.

2010

At the Australian Open, Venus Williams played through to the quarter-finals. On the way there she defeated Lucie Šafářová , Sybille Bammer , Casey Dellacqua and Francesca Schiavone . If she hadn't lost against Li Na 6: 2, 6: 7, 5: 7, she would have met Serena again in the semi-finals. As in every Grand Slam tournament in recent years, the Williams sisters also competed in doubles and defended their title. In the semifinals they defeated the duo Lisa Raymond / Rennae Stubbs and in the final again the pairing Black / Huber, thus they won their eleventh Grand Slam title.

After that, Venus played the tournaments in Dubai and Acapulco, as in the previous year . In Dubai she defended her title without losing a set, opponents included Sabine Lisicki , Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova and Viktoria Asaranka in the final . In March she continued her winning streak at the Miami tournament . On the way to the final, she defeated Daniela Hantuchová , Agnieszka Radwańska and Marion Bartoli. There she was defeated by Kim Clijsters very clearly with 2: 6, 1: 6.

After a short injury break, she returned to the tour in Rome , where she had reached the semi-finals the year before. This time, after victories over Patty Schnyder and Shahar Peer, she only made it to the quarterfinals, where she suffered one of her most painful defeats against Jelena Janković with 0: 6, 1: 6.

In contrast, she reached the finals in Madrid in both singles and doubles (with her sister). In the singles she won against Swonarjowa, Schiavone, Stosur and Peer before surprisingly lost to Aravane Rezaï in the final . Nevertheless, she moved back to world number two. In doubles, the Williams sisters won again against Black / Huber, whereby Venus was also second in this world ranking.

At the French Open she was seeded number 2 in singles; she reached the last sixteen with a win over last year's semi-finalist Dominika Cibulková , in which she failed 3: 6, 4: 6 to Nadja Petrowa. In doubles, she and her sister were able to perfect the second French Open title after 1999. It was the 12th title of the two in a Grand Slam tournament and the fourth in a row, thus a "fake Grand Slam". Until then, only the pairings Navratilova / Shriver and Fernández / Swerawa had won four Grand Slam tournaments in a row. At Wimbledon, Venus surprisingly lost to Zwetana Pironkowa in the quarterfinals with 2: 6 and 3: 6. After that, she only played the US Open, where she reached the semifinals without losing a set and was narrowly defeated there in three sets by the eventual winner Kim Clijsters. Because of a knee injury, she ended the season early; she was also unable to participate in the Tour Championships for which she had qualified.

2011

She opened the year at the Australian Open, where she first defeated Sara Errani in two straight sets. In the second round against Sandra Záhlavová , Venus Williams suffered an injury in the hip area, which she sidelined until June. She was able to prevail against Záhlavová 6: 7 (6: 8), 6: 0, 6: 4, but it was already evident during the match that she was playing in great pain. In the third round against Andrea Petković , she finally had to give up when the score was 0: 1. It was her first task during a game since Los Angeles 2004 and the first time since Beijing 2005 that she did not finish a tournament normally.

In their comeback in Eastbourne (grass), they faced Petković again in the first round (7: 5, 5: 7, 6: 3). In the second round she outclassed Ana Ivanović 6: 3, 6: 2. In the quarter-finals she failed (2: 6, 7: 5, 2: 6) for the first time to Daniela Hantuchová, against whom she only had to give two sets in the ten games before.

At Wimbledon, Venus Williams clearly prevailed against Oqgul Omonmurodova from Uzbekistan in the first round , and in round two she needed almost three hours to beat Kimiko Date Krumm . The match, which ended 6: 7, 6: 3, 8: 6, was rated as high class. However, the end came in the round of 16, where she failed with the same result as in the previous year (2: 6, 3: 6) to Pironkowa, after she had no problem in the previous round with 6: 0, 6: 2 against Martinez-Sanchez prevailed.

She had to cancel the entire summer season due to a virus infection, she was out of action until the US Open. There she was able to prevail in the first round against Wesna Dolonz . However, Venus Williams had to cancel her game against Sabine Lisicki, which was scheduled for round two, when she was diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome . In retrospect, this had probably influenced her for a long time, as she had often complained of weakness, tiredness or lack of energy on the pitch and during her games. She immediately sought treatment.

2012

In February, she and Liezel Huber won doubles in the Fed Cup game against Belarus . In March she got back on the tour with a wildcard at the WTA tournament in Miami . She lost there in the quarterfinals Agnieszka Radwańska in two sets. On the way there she defeated the number 3 at the time, Petra Kvitová , in the third set 6: 0 and in the round of 16 Ana Ivanović 6: 7, 6: 2, 6: 2.

In Charleston she also reached the quarterfinals, where she lost in three sets for the first time to Samantha Stosur. In the course of the tournament she defeated Jelena Janković, among others, 7-5, 6-0. In Madrid she was eliminated after a narrow opening win against Simona Halep in the second round against Angelique Kerber. In Rome she defeated Halep, Jekaterina Makarowa and Samantha Stosur clearly in two sets. Despite a good performance, she lost to Sharapova for the first time in five years in the quarterfinals.

Things went less well at the French Open, where she lost to Agnieszka Radwańska in round two after an opening win over Paula Ormaechea . In Wimbledon, too, she lost significantly to Jelena Wesnina after a poor performance ; it was suggested that this was related to Sjogren's syndrome diagnosed the previous year. At Wimbledon, she last lost in round one in 1997. At the side of her sister Serena, she made her comeback in doubles after more than two years. In the second round against Nadja Petrowa and Marija Kirilenko, the two turned a 3: 5 deficit in the third set. In the semifinals they defeated the world number one Huber and Raymond after losing the first set in the end with 2: 6, 6: 2, 6: 1. In the final, the Williams sisters prevailed against Lucie Hradecká and Andrea Hlaváčková in two sets and won their 13th joint Grand Slam title, their fifth at Wimbledon.

Venus Williams at the 2012 Western & Southern Open

At the Olympic Games in London , Venus took part in singles and doubles (with her sister). In the individual she first defeated the world number ten Sara Errani with 6: 3, 6: 1 and in the second round Aleksandra Wozniak just as clearly with 6: 3, 6: 1. In the second round she was again defeated by Angelique Kerber 6: 7, 6: 7. Williams missed three set balls in the first set with a score of 5: 4 and lost a 5: 1 lead in the tiebreak. In the second set, too, she couldn't use an early break. In doubles, however, the Williams sisters triumphed for the third time after 2000 and 2008. Venus thus secured her fourth gold medal at the Olympic Games. The Williams sisters again defeated Hradecká and Hlaváčková in straight sets in the final. In the second round, the two won against Doppel Kerber / Lisicki in two sets as well as in the semifinals against Petrowa / Kirilenko. With their fourth gold medal, the Williams sisters were now the most successful tennis players at the Olympics. The British Reginald Doherty had led this ranking for over a century .

In their last preparatory tournament for the US Open in Cincinnati , Venus Williams reached an individual semi-finals for the first time this season. After the opening win over Kirilenko and the victory over Chanelle Scheepers , she defeated Sara Errani (6: 3, 6: 0) again in the round of 16 and in the quarter-finals she prevailed against Samantha Stosur. In her subsequent defeat to Li Na, she complained from the middle of the second set of back problems that prevented her from serving, which she could not perform at the usual speed. In the end, she lost 5: 7, 6: 3 and 1: 6.

2013

Venus (right) with her sister Serena in the first round of doubles at the 2013 US Open

The 2013 season began Venus Williams in the top 30 of the world rankings. At the Australian Open , she failed after two strong matches due to a clearly superior Maria Sharapova. In doubles, she reached the quarterfinals with her sister Serena . After she failed in the semi-finals of the then number 109 in the world rankings, Russian Olga Putschkowa , at the rather secondary WTA tournament in Florianópolis, Brazil, a few weeks later , she was unable to compete in her third round duel at the tournament in Miami due to injury. The beginning of the clay court season was initially more successful: At the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, she reached the semi-finals, where she lost, however, clearly 1: 6, 2: 6 to her sister Serena. In the further course of the clay court season, she lost all her games and was eliminated from the French Open in the first round. Only in the Fed Cup playoffs against Sweden in April did she win this season. Because of a back injury, she did not appear at Wimbledon and slipped to 38th place in the world rankings.

The North American hard court season was hardly positive: after a first round failure in Toronto and a second round defeat in Cincinnati , she failed in the second round of the US Open to Zheng Jie . At the side of her sister, she reached the semi-finals of the doubles competition. After she had slipped to position 63 in the world rankings, she celebrated her best result in Tokyo with the semi-finals. It was defeated by Petra Kvitová in two sentences. She played her last tournament of the 2013 season in Beijing , where she was beaten 6-1 and 6-2 by Sabine Lisicki in her opening game. She finished the season in 47th place. This made the 2013 season, apart from the years 2006 and 2011, which were marked by injury breaks, her weakest since she started on the professional tour. In addition, it was only her fourth season after 1997, 2006 and 2011 in which she could not book a title in the individual.

2014

The year 2014 started promisingly for Venus Williams: She reached the final in Auckland , where she lost 2: 6, 7: 5, 4: 6 to Ana Ivanović. In Melbourne , however, she was eliminated in the first round. Thanks to a wildcard , she started right in the main field in Dubai and won her first title in almost a year and a half. After rather average results, she did not get beyond the second round at the French Open . In Wimbledon she reached the third round and gave the eventual winner Petra Kvitová a tough fight, which, however, after she had already had match point in the second set, just lost 7: 5, 6: 7 and 5: 7. In the doubles competition, Venus and Serena Williams reached the second round.

She celebrated her second big success of the season in Montreal , where she lost to Agnieszka Radwańska in straight sets after beating her sister and world number one Serena in the final after beating her semi-finals. It was the first time since 2009 that Venus could beat her sister. Thanks to this success, she reached the top 20 in the world rankings for the first time since 2011. At the US Open, she lost to Sara Errani in the third round with 0: 6, 6: 0 and 6: 7. With Serena she reached the quarterfinals in the doubles competition. In Québec she reached the final, which Mirjana Lučić-Baroni won 6: 4, 6: 3.

Williams did not play a match for the US Fed Cup team in 2014. She finished the season number 19 in the world.

2015

Venus Williams started the season with a tournament victory in Auckland . In the final, she defeated Caroline Wozniacki 2: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 3 - it was her 46th title in total. She also demonstrated her good form at the Australian Open ; with 6: 3, 2: 6 and 6: 1 she defeated Agnieszka Radwańska in the round of 16 and for the first time since Wimbledon 2010 she reached the quarter-finals in a Grand Slam tournament; She lost against her compatriot Madison Keys in three sets, but climbed to 11th place in the world rankings. In the Fed Cup, she completed two singles in the quarterfinals of World Group II against Argentina in February , which she won both.

The European clay court season was less successful. At the French Open , Sloane Stephens ended in the first round. At Wimbledon , she reached the round of 16 for the first time since 2011 . There she was defeated by her sister Serena in two sentences. In the third round of the US Open , she defeated Belinda Bencic, who was seeded at twelve, 6: 3 and 6: 4. After a clear victory over the Estonian qualifier Anett Kontaveit , she met her sister again in the quarterfinals - her first at the US Open since 2010 - to whom she lost 2: 6, 6: 1 and 3: 6.

On the East Asian tour, she won the WTA tournament in Wuhan, which has been upgraded this year . In the final against Garbiñe Muguruza , she benefited from her injury-related abandonment with a score of 6: 3 and 3: 0. In Hong Kong she made the jump to the semi-finals, where she had to admit defeat Jelena Janković.

At the end of the season, she competed in the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai. After two wins in the preliminary round, she also defeated Roberta Vinci in the semifinals and prevailed in a hard-fought final against Karolína Plíšková 7: 5 and 7: 6. It was her 48th individual title. Because of this success and the fact that she improved to position 7 in the world rankings after winning the tournament and thus ended the year in the top 10 for the first time since 2010, she was named "Comeback Player of the Year" by the WTA.

2016

After weaker results at the start of the season, she slipped back out of the top ten in the world rankings in February. In the first round of the Fed Cup , she contributed two individual victories to the overall victory against Poland . At the following tournament in Taiwan Kaohsiung she celebrated her 49th singles title overall. She won the tournament without losing a set with a final victory over the Japanese Misaki Doi .

Two more disappointing results followed. At the prestigious tournaments of Indian Wells and Miami, she failed in her opening game to Kurumi Nara and Jelena Wesnina respectively . It was the first time since 2001 that Williams returned to the Indian Wells event.

The European clay court season also seemed to be unsuccessful at first: In Rome it failed in the second round; but at the French Open she reached the second round for the first time since 2010 , in which she had to admit defeat to Timea Bacsinszky . In doubles, she also made it to the round of 16 alongside her sister.

A few weeks later at Wimbledon she reached u. a. with a close victory in the third round (7: 5, 4: 6 and 10: 8) over the up-and-coming Russian Darja Kassatkina the semifinals. It was the first time since 2010 that Venus reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament and the first time at Wimbledon since 2009 . Against Angelique Kerber, however, she drew the short straw. In doubles, she even managed to win together with her sister Serena, who had won the singles title a few hours earlier. In the final they prevailed against the Hungarian-Kazakh pairing Tímea Babos / Jaroslawa Schwedowa 6: 3 and 6: 4. It was the sisters' first Grand Slam success since 2012 . By reaching the semi-finals, Venus improved back to 7th place in the world rankings.

The North American hard court season was moderately successful. In Stanford she reached u. a. her second final of the season after defeating the young US talent Cici Bellis ; however, she was defeated by Johanna Konta in three sentences. In Montréal and at the US Open , she reached the last sixteen. However, their results at the Olympic Games in Rio were disappointing for Williams . Weakened by an injury, she failed both singles and doubles at her sister's side in round one.

During the East Asia tour, the American could in no way build on her results from the previous year. Neither in Wuhan nor in Beijing nor in Hong Kong did she get past the round of 16. She did not take part in the WTA Elite Trophy , although she was the defending champion. She finished the season in 17th place in the world rankings.

2017

The season started in Auckland, New Zealand . After a first round win over New Zealander Jade Lewis , Williams did not play her round of 16 in order not to endanger her start at the Australian Open . There she unexpectedly reached Siegen a. a. about Anastassija Pawljutschenkowa and Coco Vandeweghe the final, in which she - as last in 2003, 14 years earlier - lost to her sister Serena 4-6, 4-6. It was her first entry into the final of a Grand Slam tournament since Wimbledon in 2009 . In addition, at the age of 36, she is now the oldest Australian Open finalist in the Open Era . Due to this success, she improved to 11th place in the ranking.

For the first time in her career, Williams competed at the WTA tournament in St. Petersburg , where she clearly lost her opening game against Kristina Mladenovic in two sets. More successful were their participation in the prestigious tournaments of Indian Wells and Miami; in the former, she reached the quarter-finals, in which she drew the short straw against the eventual winner Jelena Wesnina with 2: 6, 6: 4, 3: 6. On their way to the round of the top eight, Williams u. a. the former world number one Jelena Janković. She achieved an even better result in Miami; after defeating last year's finalist Swetlana Kuznetsova in the round of 16 and Angelique Kerber, the world's number one in the quarter-finals, in two sets, she was only defeated in the semifinals by the eventual tournament winner Johanna Konta with 4-6 and 5-7. Thanks to these successes, she made it into the top ten again.

The clay court season was more enjoyable than in previous years: After a first round defeat in Charleston against German Laura Siegemund , she reached the quarter-finals at the tournament in Rome . At the French Open she also made it into the round of 16, where - as in the previous year - she had to admit defeat to the Swiss Timea Bacsinszky .

At Wimbledon , she achieved the second coup of the 2017 season: After victories a. a. against the current French Open winner Jeļena Ostapenko and an impressive performance against the British local hero Johanna Konta, she reached the final on Church Road for the first time since 2009 . After an initially brilliant start, she had to admit defeat to the Spaniard Garbiñe Muguruza with 5: 7 and 0: 6. After she had slipped out of the top ten again, she was ranked 9th in the world after the tournament.

The first part of the North American hard court season was mixed for Williams: In Toronto , she failed in the round of 16 against the eventual tournament winner Elina Switolina in two sets. A week later in Cincinnati , she lost her second round game against the Australian Ashleigh Barty , who only got into the main draw with a wild card . However, the American played much more successfully at the US Open : After a bumpy start to the tournament, she defeated the Czech Petra Kvitová in a marathon match 6: 3, 3: 6 and 7: 6 in the quarter-finals . In the semi-finals, she lost a curious game to her compatriot and eventual winner Sloane Stephens with 1: 6, 6: 0 and 5: 7. It was the first time since 2010 that Williams reached the semifinals in New York. With this result, she improved to fifth place in the world rankings.

After the US Open, Williams only took part in two tournaments: In Hong Kong , she failed in the second round against the Japanese Naomi Osaka . The US-American crowned her already successful season at the WTA Championships 2017 : After victories a. a. about the French Open winner Jeļena Ostapenko and the v. a. French Caroline Garcia , who played strongly in the second half of the season, reached the final of the unofficial WTA World Championship. There she failed 4: 6 and 4: 6 against the Danish Caroline Wozniacki . In the preliminary round of the tournament she successfully took revenge against Garbiñe Muguruza for the final defeat at Wimbledon. Venus Williams finished the season at position 5 in the world rankings. It was the first time since 2010 that she could finish a season with such a high ranking. Williams did not participate in any doubles competition in 2017.

2018

The new season got off to a sobering start for Williams: In Sydney as well as at the Australian Open , she lost her opening match. It wasn't until February that she was able to achieve her first successes in the Fed Cup against the Netherlands: She won her two individual games against Arantxa Rus and Richèl Hogenkamp . At the side of her sister Serena, however, who celebrated her comeback in these weeks after a one-year baby break, she lost straight in two sets in doubles.

In Indian Wells , she beat her sister 6-3 and 6-4 in the third round. Only in the semi-finals she was defeated by the Russian Darja Kassatkina in just three sets. She also played successfully in Miami ; u. a. she eliminated the defending champion Johanna Konta in the round of 16 , on whom she had failed in the semi-finals last year. In the quarter-finals she was surprisingly clearly defeated by her compatriot Danielle Collins , who only got into the main draw after qualifying, with 2: 6 and 3: 6.

The clay court season was anything but positive for the American: In Madrid , she failed in her opening game against Anett Kontaveit . A week later, she lost to Estonia again in their round of 16 game in Rome . At the side of her compatriot Madison Keys , Venus moved into the second round in the doubles competition; nevertheless, the pairing could not play their next game due to injury. Williams' opening success in the Eternal City against the Russian Jelena Wesnina should remain her only single win in 2018, because she also lost her first match at the French Open , this time against the Chinese Wang Qiang . It was the first time in her career that Williams was eliminated in the first round of two consecutive Grand Slam tournaments. In Paris she took part in the doubles competition at the side of her sister. They reached the second round, where they were defeated by the Slovenian-Spanish pairing Andreja Klepač / María José Martínez Sánchez .

After each initial difficulty, Williams reached the third round of the Wimbledon Championships . There she was defeated by the Dutch Kiki Bertens in three hard-fought sets with 2: 6, 7: 6 and 6: 8. Because of this defeat, she slipped to position 14 in the world rankings.

The North American hard court season was also mostly sobering for the veteran: At a smaller tournament in San José , she surprisingly lost in the quarter-finals to the Greek Maria Sakkari . In Cincinnati , she failed in the last sixteen clearly against world number one Simona Halep . And also at the US Open it was already over in the third round: She was clearly defeated by her sister Serena with 1: 6, 2: 6. After the match, she stated that she had never seen Serena so strong in a match against her. Venus then did not take part in a tournament in singles or doubles, so it was not able to qualify for the WTA Finals in Singapore - as in the previous year . The US-American slipped through this negative series at the end of the season to position 40 in the world rankings.

2019

The now 38-year-old American played her first tournament in Auckland, New Zealand , in 2019 . Here she was able to beat the former number one in the world Wiktoryja Asaranka in three sets in her opening match ; in the quarterfinals, however, she was defeated by the Canadian Bianca Andreescu . At the Australian Open she clearly failed in the third round against the then world number one Simona Halep with 2: 6 and 3: 6.

At the WTA tournament in Indian Wells Williams reached the quarterfinals, where she was defeated by Angelique Kerber . On her way there she defeated the three seeded Czech Petra Kvitová . In Miami , she made it to the round of 16, where she - as in Melbourne - was eliminated by Simona Halep. At Wimbledon, she lost 6: 4 and 6: 4 to 15-year-old Cori Gauff in the first round .

Personal

  • An older half-sister of Venus, Yetunde Price (* 1972), was shot dead in her vehicle on the morning of September 14, 2003 at her former home in Compton.
  • In July and August 2005, the American television station ABC Family showed a six-part reality show entitled Venus and Serena: For Real , which revolves around the lives of the two sisters.
  • Since 2009 she has been co-owner of the American football club Miami Dolphins together with her sister Serena and Gloria Estefan , Emilio Estefan , Fergie , Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony .
  • In 2017 she was involved in a fatal car accident.
