Roberta Vinci (born February 18, 1983 in Taranto ) is a former Italian tennis player .
Career
Roberta Vinci began playing tennis at the age of six. In 1997 she played her first ITF tournaments in her home country . In 1998 she made her debut on the WTA Tour in Palermo and won her first two ITF titles in doubles.
In 2004 she reached the semi-finals of the French Open with her then doubles partner Sandrine Testud . In 2005 she moved into the semi-finals of Eastbourne as a qualifier with a victory over Anastassija Myskina .
A major success was Italy's first time winning the Fed Cup in 2006. The team, which also Mara Santangelo , Flavia Pennetta and Francesca Schiavone belonged scored a 3: 2 win over Belgium ( Justine Henin had in the fifth and decisive game due to injury to give up). In 2009 and 2010 (4-0 and 3-1 each against the USA) Vinci was able to repeat this success with the Italian team. Noteworthy: she only lost her first double in the Fed Cup in February 2015 (balance: 18: 1).
In 2011, with three WTA tournament victories within a few months (Barcelona, 's-Hertogenbosch, Budapest), she made it among the 25 best in the world for the first time. At the Rogers Cup in Toronto, she continued her winning streak. In round two she eliminated world number one Caroline Wozniacki 6: 4 and 7: 5, after in the second set it looked as if the top seeded Dane could turn the tide after two breaks with a 5: 1 lead. This was the first time Vinci was in the top 20 of the WTA world rankings .
In 2012 she and her doubles partner Sara Errani first reached the final of the Australian Open , which they lost to Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Swonarjowa 7: 5, 4: 6 and 3: 6. The two were able to celebrate their titles number nine and ten at the clay court tournaments in Madrid and at the home tournament in Rome . On June 8, 2012, they won their first Grand Slam title in doubles in Paris with a final victory over the pairing Marija Kirilenko / Nadja Petrowa . A week later, Errani and Vinci won their seventh title in 's-Hertogenbosch in 2012.
At the US Open , Vinci caused a surprise in singles when she made it to the quarter-finals for the first time with a straight two-set win (6: 1, 6: 4) over number 2 in the world, Agnieszka Radwańska . In doubles, she won the final together with her compatriot Errani against Andrea Hlaváčková and Lucie Hradecká 6: 4 and 6: 2. During the season, the two won their third joint Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and they also celebrated victories in Paris and Doha . Because of her good results, Vinci also achieved new career records in the WTA ranking. In doubles she was at the top of the world rankings, in singles she climbed to 11th place in June 2013, which she improved to 10th on February 22, 2016.
In 2013 she won the team competition for the fourth time with a final victory over Russia with the Italian Fed Cup team. She renounced the doubles and her second singles because the match was already decided.
In 2014 she was able to repeat the win at the side of Errani at the Australian Open . They also won the final of the doubles competition together at Wimbledon (6: 1, 6: 3) and thus their fifth Grand Slam title. Both of them achieved a so-called career grand slam ; that is, they have won each of the four Grand Slam tournaments at least once.
Vinci now has ten singles and 25 doubles titles, including 22 victories alongside Errani. Since the 2: 3 Fed Cup defeat against France in February 2015 (Vinci / Errani lost their doubles game against Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic clearly with 1: 6.2: 6), they no longer play as a duo.
In September 2015, however, Vinci achieved her greatest sporting success. In the semifinals of the US Open, she eliminated the defending champion and huge favorite Serena Williams (they spoke of a betting rate of 300: 1) and was thus for the first time in her career in the final of a Grand Slam tournament, and also in a historic one , the first purely Italian final. In this, however, she had to admit defeat to her long-time companion Flavia Pennetta 6: 7, 4 , 2: 6.
At the first ever tournament in St. Petersburg, she qualified for a premier final in 2016 for the first time, in which she defeated the Swiss Belinda Bencic in straight sets. Shortly before her 33rd birthday, she achieved her tenth and most important tournament victory in the individual. In addition, she was able to break the limit of ten million US dollars in prize money, which her compatriots Schiavone, Pennetta and Errani had already achieved before her. On February 22, 2016, she was 10th in the world rankings for the first time.
On May 14, 2018, she ended her tennis career, previously she was eliminated in the first round against Aleksandra Krunić at the WTA tournament in Rome . She announced this plan during the break of the season in November 2017.
