Kristina Mladenovic (born May 14, 1993 in Saint-Pol-sur-Mer , Nord-Pas-de-Calais ) is a French tennis player and four-time Grand Slam winner in women's doubles. She won the doubles competitions of the French Open ( 2016 and 2019 ) and the Australian Open ( 2018 and 2020 ) twice . On June 10, 2019, she became the 42nd number one in the double world rankings .

Career

Successes as a junior: 2009 and 2009

Mladenovic started tennis at the age of eight under the guidance of her parents, who immigrated to France from Serbia in 1992 . Even as a junior, she had great successes. In 2007 she won the European Youth Championships in the U-14 age group. She then won the double competition of the renowned Porto Alegre Junior Championships twice - in 2008 together with Maryna Sanewska and the following year with Silvia Njirić - as well as the double competition of the Osaka Mayor's Cup , both alongside Tímea Babos . In 2009 she was also able to win the individual competition in Osaka. Her biggest victory, however, was the triumph in the junior women competition of the French Open 2009 , in which she prevailed in the final against Darja Gavrilowa and remained without a set loss throughout the tournament. She then took over the leadership of the junior tennis world rankings and once again reached the final in Wimbledon in singles, in which she had to admit defeat to Noppawan Lertcheewakarn , and in doubles, which she lost again against Lertcheewakarn and Sally Peers alongside Njirić .

First years on the tour: 2008 to 2012

Mladenovic made her debut on the WTA tour in 2008 after receiving a wildcard for qualifying for the indoor tournament in Paris , but failed there in the first round to Petra Kvitová . The following year she started, also with a wild card from the French Tennis Association , at the Australian Open for the first time in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, where she was eliminated in the first round against Patty Schnyder . She was also allowed to start at the French Open and Wimbledon , but both times did not win. At the same time, Mladenovic gained his first experience on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour .

In 2010 she won her first match in the main round of a WTA tournament against Stefanie Vögele in Strasbourg . The following year she won four titles on the ITF tour, including a $ 50,000 tournament in Ankara at the end of the season . In 2012 she finally managed to make her first jump into the top 100 of the world rankings by moving into the third round of the US Open and the semi-finals in Québec . At the end of the season she won her biggest individual title to date in a tournament in the WTA Challenger Series in Taipei after a final victory over Chang Kai-chen . Mladenovic had a much more successful year in doubles. Together with Klaudia Jans-Ignacik , she won her first WTA title at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, followed by her second in Québec alongside Tatjana Malek .

2013 to 2015

Together with changing partners, Mladenovic won five more WTA titles in a total of six finals in 2013. So she triumphed with Galina Woskobojewa in Memphis , with Lucie Šafářová in Charleston , won with Chan Hao-ching in Oeiras , with Katarzyna Piter in Palermo and alongside Flavia Pennetta in Osaka . However, she achieved her greatest successes in doubles together with Daniel Nestor in mixed. Together with the Canadian, she was in the final of the French Open , which she lost to Lucie Hradecká and František Čermák , before they then celebrated their first joint Grand Slam triumph at Wimbledon after beating Bruno Soares and Lisa Raymond in the final . In the individual, she reached a semi-final at the WTA tournament in Paris for the first time and recorded her first win against a top 10 player against Petra Kvitová , which was followed a little later in Florianópolis by her second, with which she made the jump into the top 50 of the world rankings managed. Nevertheless, she ended the season in the singles with a negative match record. The stagnant performances in 2013 and 2014 can also be attributed to the successes in doubles, which played an increasingly important role in the French woman's career.

In 2014 Mladenovic made it into the third round of the French Open for the first time and scored another semi-final in Istanbul . Together with Daniel Nestor, she won the third Grand Slam title in Melbourne ; in the final, the two prevailed against Sania Mirza and Horia Tecău . In Acapulco , she won her eighth WTA double title together with Voskoboyeva. In the same year she began her first collaboration with Tímea Babos in doubles, with whom she was already successful in the junior division. The two reached the final at Wimbledon for the first time, in which they lost to Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani without a chance. At the end of the season she was in the final at the WTA Challenger in Limoges , but lost to Tereza Smitková .

At the beginning of 2015, Mladenovic was once again in the final of the Australian Open , as in the previous year , which she lost this time to Martina Hingis and Leander Paes . In the individual, after reaching the semi-finals in Marrakech , she advanced to her first WTA individual final in Strasbourg , but had to admit defeat to Samantha Stosur there. In addition, she came at the French Open and Wimbledon in the third round and reached the semi-finals in Birmingham , in which she could only be beaten by Karolína Plíšková . However, she achieved the greatest success of her individual career to date in New York , where she was able to advance to the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. By winning, she made her first jump into the top 30 of the world rankings. Together with Babos she triumphed in Dubai and Rome , alongside Belinda Bencic she also won the title in Washington .

Rise to world-class doubles player: 2016

In 2016 she reached two individual finals in 's-Hertogenbosch and Hong Kong , but lost each to Coco Vandeweghe and Caroline Wozniacki . At the Australian Open and the French Open , she came into the third round. Due to ten first round defeats, she fell back to 42nd place in the world rankings by the end of the season. From then on, Mladenovic formed a solid pairing with her compatriot Caroline Garcia in doubles . After first two lost finals in Sydney and Dubai , the two won three times in a row on clay court in Charleston , Stuttgart , Madrid and then crowned their cooperation with victory on home soil at the French Open , where she in the finals Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Wesnina beat . They then made it to the final of the US Open , but lost there, as well as in the final in Beijing to Lucie Šafářová and Bethanie Mattek-Sands . At the end of the year, the two shared second place in the double world rankings and thus qualified for the WTA Championships 2016 in Singapore, where they were stopped again in the semifinals by Šafářová and Mattek-Sands. Nevertheless, the two were voted double of the year by the WTA . At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro she reached the second round after a success against Aleksandra Krunić , in which she failed at Madison Keys . The result of the French Open winners in women's doubles was disappointing , where Garcia and Mladenovic seeded number two were eliminated in round one against the Japanese duo Misaki Doi and Eri Hozumi . In the mixed competition , she started with Pierre-Hugues Herbert as a second seeded doubles, but in this discipline, too, the end against Roberta Vinci and Fabio Fognini followed at the beginning .

In 2016, Mladenovic was in the final of the Fed Cup with France for the first time since 2005 . In the final against the Czech Republic , which the French lost 3-2, they lost to Karolína Plíšková in a marathon match with 14:16 in the third set. Also in the final doubles she lost on the side of Caroline Garcia against Plíšková, who played together with Barbora Strýcová.

Promotion to the top 10 individual player: 2017

At the beginning of the 2017 season, Mladenovic won the Hopman Cup in Perth together with Richard Gasquet . In the final they prevailed against the Americans Coco Vandeweghe and Jack Sock , but Mladenovic lost her individual game. After making it to the semi-finals of the Australian Open 2017 , Mladenovic announced the end of her collaboration with Garcia. Both stated that they wanted to focus more on their individual careers from now on. In fact, Mladenovic was able to win her first WTA individual title at the first WTA tournament after the Australian Open in St. Petersburg , after beating Julija Putinzewa in the final . The triumph proved to be the initial spark for Mladenovic, who in the following months advanced with consistently good performances into the extended world elite of women's tennis. So she reached three more finals in Acapulco , Stuttgart and the Premier Mandatory tournament in Madrid , but could not win any. She also reached a Grand Slam quarter-finals for the second time at the French Open , but lost to Timea Bacsinszky . The strong results in the first half of the season, in which she won against five top 10 players, was followed by a complete break in form in the second. After reaching the second round in Washington, Mladenovic could not win any of their remaining ten games of the season. Nevertheless, she was listed in the top 10 in the world for the first time in October and qualified for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai. There, too, she lost both matches against Magdaléna Rybáriková and Julia Görges and was eliminated in the group stage.

Further successes in doubles: Since 2018

In 2018 she decided to start again in doubles and teamed up again with Tímea Babos, at whose side she was able to win her third Grand Slam title in doubles after winning the final of the Australian Open against the Russian duo Jekaterina Makarowa and Jelena Wesnina . In singles, she ended her series of 15 games without a win in a row with the renewed entry into the final of St. Petersburg , in which she was defeated this time by Petra Kvitová. It was the only semi-final Mladenovic reached that year; in London and Cincinnati it came into the third round. Due to the weaker performance, Mladenovic slipped in the individual world rankings to 42nd place by the end of the year. Much better it worked for them in the doubles, where she at the US Open in a Grand Slam final was with Babos together for the second time this year, but there Coco Vandeweghe and Ashleigh Barty were defeated. After a close two-set win over Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková , she won her first title at the WTA Championships in Singapore .

In 2019 Mladenovic continued her successes from the previous year at the side of Babos. After missing their title defense at the Australian Open 2019 and at the French Open in the final against the Chinese duo Duan Yingying and Zheng Saisai , the two were able to win. For Mladenovic it was already her second triumph in front of a home crowd in Paris. With the victory, Mladenovic took over the lead in the double world rankings on June 10, 2019 as the second French woman after Julie Halard-Decugis , which she held for a total of eight weeks with interruptions until March 2020. In the individual, Mladenovic only drew attention to herself selectively in 2019 when she came out of the qualification in Rome in the quarter-finals, in which she had to admit defeat to Maria Sakkari . In addition, she achieved the semifinals in Zhengzhou after a victory over Elina Switolina and after a success over Kiki Bertens the semifinals at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, in which she could only be stopped by the eventual winner Belinda Bencic. Together with Babos, she defended her title at the WTA Championships 2019 , which took place in Shenzhen for the first time this season, after a safe win against Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strýcová . After the match, the two were named WTA Doubles Team of the Year .

With three wins, Mladenovic contributed significantly to the 3-2 triumph of the French team in the 2019 Fed Cup final against Australia . After two wins in singles over Ajla Tomljanović and world number one Ashleigh Barty, she achieved the decisive point to win the title in the reunited doubles at the side of Caroline Garcia against Barty and Samantha Stosur. Since her debut for France in the 3-2 defeat by Slovakia in 2012, Mladenovic has played 34 singles and doubles for her country, of which she won 24 (individual record 11: 8).

At the Australian Open 2020 , the final of the WTA Championships final was repeated, from which Mladenovic and Babos once again emerged as clear winners. For Mladenovic it was the fourth, for her partner the third Grand Slam title in doubles.
