Ajla Tomljanović (born May 7, 1993 in Zagreb ) is a Croatian- Australian tennis player . She has also been an Australian citizen since January 2018 .

Career

Tomljanović, who began playing tennis at the age of seven, had international successes as a junior. In 2009 she won the double junior title at the Australian Open together with Christina McHale and the double competition of the renowned International Casablanca Junior Cup alongside Heather Watson . There she also prevailed in the individual competition and then rose to position four in the junior tennis world rankings .

In 2008 Tomljanović gained her first experience on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour , on which she played her first final at the end of 2009 and won her first title in a tournament in the $ 25,000 category at the start of the 2010 season in Plantation . For the American Premier Mandatory tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami , she received a wildcard for the main draw and made her debut at the Women's Tennis Association , but she lost in the first round. After two further finals in Pelham and Prague , Tomljanović went to the French Open for the first time in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament, but failed at the beginning. In 2011 she won two more titles on the ITF tour and won her first success in the main draw of a WTA tournament in Budapest against Vanda Lukács .

Due to a disease of Pfeiffer's glandular fever , Tomljanović was only able to play six tournaments in the 2012 season and fell far behind in the world rankings. In 2013, she returned to the tour again, reaching two finals in ITF tournaments, including the $ 100,000 tournament in Midland and as a wildcard the round of 16 in Miami . Subsequently, she was able to achieve her first title in a tournament in the $ 50,000 category in Dothan and qualified for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at Wimbledon , but lost in round one to Bojana Jovanovski Petrović in overtime in the third set. Her first major round success she then achieved in New York , where she was also able to beat Casey Dellacqua coming out of qualification . Tomljanović finished the year in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time.

In 2014 she reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open alongside Jarmila Wolfe, her best ever result in doubles. In addition, she surprised at the French Open with a third-round win over Agnieszka Radwańska , her first win against a top 10 player, before she was beaten by Carla Suárez Navarro on her first participation in the round of 16 of a Grand Slam tournament . At the US Open , she started for Australia for the first time after she had received the settlement permit there. Until she was granted Australian citizenship in 2018, she only represented her new home at the four Grand Slam tournaments, as these are directly subordinate to the ITF ; in the remaining tournaments of the WTA tour, she still played under the Croatian flag.

In early 2015 Tomljanović reached her first WTA final in Pattaya , in which she was defeated by Daniela Hantuchová in three sets. The following year, after her opening defeat at the Australian Open , she had to undergo an operation on her shoulder, from which she did not return to Acapulco until March 2017 . Then she achieved her best result of the season in Miami by moving into the third round. Later in the year she was able to achieve three finals on the ITF tour, but remained without a title. In 2018 Tomljanović was in her second WTA final after two semi-finals at the start of the season at tournaments of the WTA Challenger Series in Rabat , but failed to Elise Mertens . She also lost her second season finale in Seoul , this time against Kiki Bertens . Towards the end of another changeable season, in which she reached the quarter-finals again in San José , Tomljanović wintered for the first time in the top 50 of the season.

After reaching the quarter-finals in Brisbane and her fourth WTA final in Hua Hin , in which she had to admit defeat in the tiebreak of the third set against Dajana Jastremska , Tomljanović was able to triumph over Aryna Sabalenka in Miami after almost five years Record success against a player from the top 10 in the world. She then achieved her best world ranking position to date with 39th place. By the end of the season Tomljanović had to struggle again with growing inconsistency, where she made her sit up and take notice again in Zhengzhou with the move into the semi-finals after she beat Kiki Bertens in the second round. There she was eliminated against the eventual winner Karolína Plíšková and ended the season just outside the top 50 in the world.

In February 2010, she played in Lisbon against Portugal for the first time for Croatia in the Fed Cup . In 2010 and 2011 she played eleven games for the Croatian Fed Cup team, of which she won four. In the 2019 Fed Cup final , she started for the team in her new home country Australia . In the 2: 3 defeat of her team against France , she started twice in the individual, initially losing to Kristina Mladenovic , but was able to win her second encounter against Pauline Parmentier .
