Heather Miriam Watson (born May 19, 1992 in Guernsey ) is a British tennis player .
Career
Watson, who comes from the Channel Island of Guernsey and started tennis at the age of seven, was a top international junior. At twelve, she moved to Florida to attend the tennis academy of Nick Bollettieri to train. Her greatest success was the triumph in the junior women competition of the US Open 2009 , where she clearly beat Jana Butschina from Russia in the final . In the same year she also won the double competition of the renowned International Casablanca Junior Cup at the side of Ajla Tomljanović and together with Tímea Babos reached the final of the junior women's competition of the French Open , which they lost to Elena Bogdan and Noppawan Lertcheewakarn . In the junior women's tennis world rankings , she came third.
Parallel to her junior career, she also made her debut on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour in 2009 , where she won her first professional title in the same year. Watson made her debut on the WTA tour in 2010 in Miami , where she came into the main draw with a wildcard , but lost there at the beginning. In Eastbourne she won her first major round win on the WTA tour coming from qualifying against Aleksandra Wozniak , but had no chance in the second round against Wiktoryja Asaranka . Afterwards she was allowed to compete in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in Wimbledon , also equipped with a wildcard, but failed at the start to Romina Oprandi . With two more titles on the ITF tour, including her first win in a $ 50,000 tournament, she was able to finish the season in the top 200 of the world rankings.
In 2011 Watson reached her first WTA quarterfinals as a qualifier in Auckland at the start of the season . She also successfully qualified for the main round at the French Open , where she won her first match in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament against Stéphanie Foretz Gacon . At the end of the year Watson, who made it to the quarterfinals again in Québec , was among the top 100 in the world for the first time. In 2012 she moved into the third round for the first time at Wimbledon , in which she was defeated by Agnieszka Radwańska . At the Olympic Games , which were also played in London, she beat Sílvia Soler Espinosa in the singles opener , before failing in the second round to Marija Kirilenko . She competed in doubles with Laura Robson ; Together, at the beginning of the tournament, the two were eliminated in three sets against the German duo Angelique Kerber and Sabine Lisicki . At the side of Marina Eraković , she previously won her first WTA doubles title in Stanford , followed by the second in Dallas a short time later. Watson was able to celebrate her greatest success so far in Osaka by winning her first WTA individual title after she won 7: 5, 5: 7 in the final against Chang Kai-chen in a match lasting over three hours and after defending five match points , 7: 6 4 prevailed. Watson then ended the season and wintered for the first time in the top 50 of the world rankings.
In 2013 she was able to build on the good form of the previous year and reached the third round at the Australian Open for the first time. In the spring she contracted glandular fever and then fell into a depression that lasted until the end of the year and led to her being outside the top 100 again at the end of the season. In 2014 she therefore played more on the ITF tour again and triumphed in Midland and then in Prague in two tournaments in the $ 100,000 category. Returning to the top 100 in the world, she made it to the semi-finals in Eastbourne , where she was only stopped by the eventual winner Madison Keys . In doubles, she won her third WTA title together with Alexandra Panowa in Baku . After she scored the third round at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, she was able to move into the top 50 in the world again at the end of the year.
At the beginning of the 2015 season, Watson won her second WTA title in Hobart after beating Madison Brengle in the final and remained without a set loss throughout the tournament. She then achieved her best world ranking position to date with 38th place. At the Premier Mandatory tournament in Indian Wells , she then made it to the round of 16 for the first time, where she won her first victory over a top 10 player in the third round over Radwańska. At Wimbledon she was in the third round for the second time this year and only had to admit defeat to the eventual winner Serena Williams in three sets.
In 2016, Watson succeeded in winning her third individual title on the WTA tour in Monterrey with a final win over Kirsten Flipkens, and subsequently in Miami , where she was defeated by Simona Halep for the first time . After that, Watson's individual results began to stagnate. Only occasionally she was able to show mostly in smaller tournaments. In doubles, however, she was able to celebrate the greatest success of her career so far with the triumph of the mixed competition at Wimbledon at the side of Henri Kontinen . At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she first defeated Peng Shuai in singles , before being eliminated in three sets in the second round against Elina Switolina . She competed in doubles with Johanna Konta ; the two won against Jelena Janković and Aleksandra Krunić at the start , but failed in round two to Chan Hao-ching and Chan Yung-jan from Taiwan . The following year, Watson's successes on the WTA tour were limited to the British grass pitch season, where she first reached the finals at an ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category in Surbiton and then reached the semi-finals in Eastbourne , where she won Caroline Wozniacki in three sets was subject. At Wimbledon , she achieved her best Grand Slam result of the year with the third round.
In 2018 she won her fourth WTA double title together with Tatjana Maria in Acapulco and made it into the quarter-finals with her for the first time at the double tournament at Wimbledon , where they were defeated by the eventual winners Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková . In singles, she was in Hobart and Quebec each in the semifinals and reached the final of the $ 100,000 tournament in Vancouver on the ITF tour , which she won the following year . At the end of the 2020 season, she played another WTA final in Tianjin , which she lost to Rebecca Peterson .
