Madison Brengle (born April 3, 1990 in Dover , Delaware ) is an American tennis player .

Career

Brengle mainly plays tournaments on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour and has so far won 15 singles and seven doubles titles; the first of them in 2005 at the age of only 15. Because of her promising talent, she immediately received a wildcard from the American Tennis Association for the US Open qualifying tournament , from which she was eliminated in the first round. In 2006 she got another chance in the qualification in New York , in which she survived her first match this time before she failed to Julija Bejhelsymer . In the following year she reached two Grand Slam finals among the juniors, once at the junior women competition of the Australian Open 2007 , where she had to admit defeat to Anastassja Pawljutschenkowa in two tiebreaks, and at Wimbledon , which she lost to Urszula Radwańska .

In 2008 she received a wildcard into the main field of the Australian Open , but failed there at the start to Tetjana Perebyjnis . She was also allowed to compete in the finals in Paris , but lost again in round one to her compatriot Bethanie Mattek-Sands . After constant results on the ITF tour, she finished the year in the top 200 of the world rankings for the first time . Thereafter, Brengle's performance stagnated for several seasons at the ITF level, with her first ITF $ 25,000 title in Hammond in 2011, followed by three more in Fort Walton , Rancho Santa Fe and Landisville in 2012 and 2013 . More than three years after her first major round success on the WTA tour in College Park against Melinda Czink , she qualified for the first quarter-finals of a WTA tournament at the end of the 2014 season in Linz and benefited from two tasks in succession Irina-Camelia Begu and Ana Ivanović before being beaten by Karolína Plíšková in the round of eight . By performing well on the ITF tour and winning two $ 50.00 tournaments in Lexington and Las Vegas , she was listed in the world's top 100 for the first time in her career at the end of the year.

At the beginning of 2015 Brengle made his final breakthrough on the WTA Tour at the tournaments in Australia. After she had first reached the second round in Brisbane as a qualifier , she played in Hobart , also from the qualification, in her first WTA final, in which she was defeated by Heather Watson . At the subsequent Australian Open she was in the qualification after a total of 24 unsuccessful attempts, due to her improved world ranking position for the first time directly in the main field. After an opening win over the German top 15 player Andrea Petković , she made it to the fourth round, but had no chance against Madison Keys there. Nevertheless, she climbed further up the world rankings and, after reaching the semifinals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, where she celebrated her first success over a top 10 player in the first round against Petra Kvitová, achieved her 35th place best world ranking so far. However, this was followed by a series of nine two-set defeats in a row on clay court and grass, from which she only recovered on American hard court, where she reached the third round of a Grand Slam in New York , in which she was stopped by Anett Kontaveit has been. She finished the season confidently in the top 50.

In 2016 Brengle could not repeat the results of the previous year, but she still had some respectable successes to show. She scored the third round again at the Australian Open and, after another win against Petra Kvitová, reached the quarter-finals in Dubai , where she was defeated by the eventual winner Sara Errani in three sets. In Osprey she then won her eighth ITF title. Her best result on the WTA Tour was reaching the semi-finals in 's-Hertogenbosch . At the beginning of the 2017 season, Brengle surprised again with a win against Serena Williams in the second round of Auckland . After that, however, she was increasingly on the American ITF tour, on which she was able to win two tournaments in the $ 60,000 category in a row in Charlottesville and Charleston . In Wimbledon Brengle then managed her third victory over Petra Kvitová, through which she was able to qualify for the third round of the lawn slam for the first time.

From 2018, Brengle made a name for herself primarily as a title contender at higher-class American ITF tournaments. At the beginning of the year she celebrated her greatest triumph in Midland and did not give up more than five games in any of the five games there. In the same year she won again the tournament in Landisville and won the $ 60,000 tournament in Stockton , also without losing a set. After two more ITF titles in 2019, for the third time in landisville and in Berkeley , she was able to finish the season in the top 100 of the world rankings for the sixth time. In 2020 she was able to book her 16th and so far biggest career title at the tournament of the WTA Challenger Series in Newport Beach with a final victory over Stefanie Vögele .
