Fort Walton Beach is a city in Okaloosa County in the US state of Florida with 19,507 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Fort Walton Beach is located at the transition from Santa Rosa Sound (part of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway ) to Choctawhatchee Bay on the Gulf Coast of Florida and borders the cities of Mary Esther and Cinco Bayou . The city is about 40 km south of Crestview and about 60 km east of Pensacola . After Crestview, it is the second largest city in the metropolitan area of ​​Fort Walton Beach .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 19,507 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 9592 households. The population density was 1010.7 inh / km². 77.7% of the population identified themselves as whites , 12.3% as African American , 0.7% as Indians and 3.2% as Asian Americans . 2.4% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.7% to several ethnic groups. 7.9% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 92.16% of the population, 3.54% spoke Spanish and 4.30% had another mother tongue.

economy

Fort Walton Beach's economy is primarily driven by two factors: military and tourism. The city borders on the air force bases Hurlburt Field and Eglin Air Force Base and benefits from this in the service sector and through the settlement of supplier companies. Tourism is limited to spring ( spring break ) and the main season in summer.
