Hurlburt Field is a military airfield of the United States Air Force (USAF) in Okaloosa County , Florida . It is west of the city of Mary Esther , on the Eglin Air Force Base Reservation . Hurlburt Field used to belong to Field No. 9 to the Eglin AFB. The entire base has a size of 27 km² and employs almost 8,000 military personnel.
Hurlburt Field is home to the Air Force Special Operations Command and the 1st Special Operations Wing . The squadron supports special operations for all major commands with its units . The 1st Special Operations Group , subordinate to the Wing, has over 1,400 members and is divided into eight squadrons: 4th Special Operations Squadron with AC-130U Spooky Gunship , 8th Special Operations Squadron with CV-22 Osprey , 15th Special Operations Squadron with MC-130H Combat Talon II , 34th Special Operations Squadron and 319th Special Operations Squadron with U-28A as airborne units, as well as the 1st Special Operations Support Squadron , 23rd Weather Squadron , 1st Special Operations Group, Detachment 1 and the 11th Intelligence Squadron in support. The Naval Special Warfare Center (NSWC) maintains a Combat Training Range Detachment of the Navy SEALs at the base.
The site was named after First Lieutenant Donald Wilson Hurlburt, who died in a plane crash on the site in 1943.
