The Southwest Florida International Airport ( IATA code : RSW , ICAO code : KRSW ) is an international airport in Fort Myers in the US state of Florida . It is publicly owned by the Lee County Port Authority .
Due to the densely populated hinterland, including with second homes, the former regional airport has now reached a place among the 50 most passenger-rich US airports with more than 9 million passengers per year.
Location and transport links
Southwest Florida International Airport is located 17 kilometers southeast of downtown Fort Myers. It has a junction on Interstate 75 and Florida State Road 93 , which run on a common route. The Southwest Florida International Airport is buses in the public transport involved, the route 50 Nahverkehrsgesellschaft LeeTran runs regularly at him.
history
The airport was opened as a regional airport on May 14, 1983 after almost ten years of planning. It was initially called Southwest Florida Regional Airport and replaced Page Field as an airport for commercial aviation. Since May 14, 1993 it has been known as Southwest Florida International Airport . On September 9, 2005, a new passenger terminal was opened south of the runway . The old terminal north of the runway was then demolished.

Start-and runway
Southwest Florida International Airport has a runway labeled 06/24. This is 3658 meters long, 46 meters wide and has an asphalt surface. In the long term, the construction of a second, parallel runway with a length of 2774 meters and a width of 46 meters on the other side of the passenger terminal is planned.

Southwest Florida International Airport has a passenger terminal with three concourses. The concourses are labeled B, C and D and are a total of 28 piers equipped. Ten of these gates are located in Concourse D, while the other Concourses have nine gates each. United States Customs and Border Protection facilities are located at two gates in Concourse B , so that international arrivals without border preclearance can only be processed there. The letters A and E should only be assigned when the terminal is expanded to include new concourses.
Concourse B with gates B1 to B9 is used by Air Canada , Eurowings , Frontier Airlines , Southwest Airlines and Sun Country Airlines . Concourse C with gates C1 to C9 is used by Delta Air Lines / Delta Connection , United Airlines and Westjet Airlines . Concourse D with gates D1 to D10 is used by American Airlines , Jetblue Airways and Spirit Airlines .
Airlines and Destinations
At Southwest Florida International Airport, 15 different airlines offer direct flights to a total of 52 destinations, although many destinations are only served seasonally. Direct flights to the west coast of the USA and Canada are not available. However, there are good connections, for example with Delta Air Lines to the Atlanta hub . Additional daily connections are to Newark , New York , Chicago-O'Hare , Boston , Dallas / Fort Worth , Indianapolis , Minneapolis / Saint Paul , Detroit , Charlotte , Philadelphia , Miami , Orlando , Atlantic City , Baltimore , Washington DC and Cleveland offered.
International direct flights are available to Canada ( Toronto-Pearson and Montreal ). Until the long-haul flights of the insolvent Air Berlin were discontinued in October 2017, Fort Myers was served three times a week from Düsseldorf . Eurowings has been operating flights from Düsseldorf (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday), Cologne / Bonn (Friday) and Munich (Tuesday and Sunday) to Fort Myers since May 2018 .
