The airport was initially used exclusively for military purposes, the first civil flights were carried out in the 1950s. However, civil aviation at the airport was not really of great importance due to the coexistence of the nearby Tampa International Airport , which dominated this area. In order to change this situation a little, the airport management decided in 2007 to start an extensive expansion program for the passenger building, which had a total order volume of 9.5 million dollars. From 1993 to 2004 the airport also served as the base for Southeast Airlines .
