On January 27, 1977, the airport received a customs office and has been known as Kent County International Airport ever since . The airport continued to grow in the 1990s, and in 1994 there were 150 daily connections to 13 destinations. In the same year, the expansion of the second runway was completed, which was supplemented in 1997 by a runway running in north-south direction. The aim was to be able to renovate the existing 08R / 26L runway during operation and to achieve greater flexibility.
The new cargo center was built in 1999, and in the same year the airport was given its current name in honor of former President Gerald Ford , who represented the congressional constituency in the House of Representatives for almost 25 years .
