history
The groundbreaking ceremony for Wayne County Airport took place in April 1929. The airport was opened to the public in September 1929, but the first flight did not take place until February 22, 1930. The inauguration took place on September 4, 1930.
During the Second World War the airport was used by the US Army , but the capacity was reached. Therefore new hangars and runways were built. The airport was also renamed Romulus Army Air Field . During the war, numerous members of the Women Airforce Service Pilots squadron were stationed at Romulus Army Air Field. In 1944 the US Army announced that it wanted to leave the airport.
In 1947, Wayne County Airport was renamed Detroit-Wayne Major Airport and expanded to four square miles. In 1956, the Civil Aeronautics Administration , a predecessor of the Federal Aviation Administration , announced that it would equip the airport with long-range radar to prepare it for the dawn of the jet age. In 1958, the airport was renamed Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport . Terminal 1 was also opened. In 1966 Terminal 2, also known as the North Terminal, opened. In June 1966, the last airlines moved from Willow Run Airport to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, so that it was used by a total of 13 airlines. The next year Terminal 1 was renamed LC Smith Terminal. In 1974 the Michael Berry International Terminal was built. In 1975 Terminal 2 was renamed JM Davey Terminal.
In 1986, Northwest Orient Airlines and Republic Airlines merged to form Northwest Airlines, which from then on used Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport as a hub . In 1992 the Federal Aviation Administration put a new control tower into operation, it cost 15 million US dollars and was the highest control tower in the region at 76 meters . In 1996 Wayne County and Northwest Airlines announced plans to build a new terminal. In 1997 a nature reserve was opened in Sumpter Township to replace wetlands that were destroyed when the airport was expanded. In 2001 the new runway 04L / 22R was opened. A new terminal was opened on February 25, 2002 and named after Edward H. McNamara. In the same year, the Wayne County Airport Authority was established to operate several airports in Wayne County. In 2005, the JM Davey Terminal was demolished to make way for a new North Terminal. This was opened on September 17, 2008, in the same year the LC Smith Terminal and the Michael Berry Terminal were closed.
In 2008, Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines merged , so that Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport has served Delta Air Lines as a hub ever since. In 2012, new noise barriers were built to reduce the noise during engine tests after maintenance. In 2017, the Wayne County Airport Authority moved from the former LC Smith Terminal to the new Michael Berry Administration Building next to the North Terminal.
