Anthony Wayne

Wayne County was one of the original counties that dates back to the establishment of the Northwest Territory . His name was chosen in honor of the American General Anthony Wayne . Originally, the county comprised the entire area of the lower peninsula of Michigan and some sections that now belong to northern Ohio , Indiana and Illinois . By order of the Territory Secretary and Acting Governor, Winthrop Sargent , the county's boundaries were changed on August 15, 1796 to begin at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River , thence west to Fort Wayne , then to the southernmost point of Lake Michigan , then along it West bank to the north to the territorial border in the Upper Lake , and from there to run along the territorial border to the starting point in Lake Erie .

After New York, the county was hardest hit by the corona epidemic in 2020 , when almost 300 deaths were counted in early April. That was nearly half of the casualties in the state of Michigan. On April 6th, Johns Hopkins University reported 293 deaths, on 11th there were 652, two days later 704, on 15th April 820, on 17th it was 981, on 19th it was 1070. The numbers have continued to rise since then: 1148 (April 21), 1278 (22nd), 1580 (April 27th), 1682 (April 29th), 1924 (May 4th) - at that time the number of deaths in the state of Michigan was 4,135, in Wayne County excluding Detroit 827
