Trenton is a city in Wayne County , Michigan in the Southeast US -amerikanischen state of Michigan. According to the 2000 census , the city has 19,584 inhabitants. Trenton is part of Downriver, a group of (mostly) working class suburbs on the west bank of the Detroit River within Metro Detroit , the metropolitan area around the city of Detroit .

history

Popularly, Abram Caleb Truax is considered the city's founder. This was awarded in 1816 after the end of the British-American War by the US government to a parcel on the Detroit River in Michigan territory . However, Trenton was only registered as a village in 1855 after Giles Bryan Slocum built a shipyard in 1834 and the resulting success as a center of steamship construction.

The businessman Solomon Sibley from Detroit (later federal prosecutor and politician) started the quarrying of limestone a little north of what was then the town center. Quarry stones were used in the construction of many buildings in Detroit. It was later sold to Austin Church, who used the limestone in the household soda brand Arm & Hammer, which is still known today .

Industry

The city has many different factories from companies such as B. Chrysler (engine plant), Solutia (chemical plant) and Detroit Edison (power plant), which employ many of the residents. Oakwood Southshore Medical Center (formerly Seaway Hospital) is located within the city limits and has 203 beds. The former “McLouth Steel” steelworks is also located there.
