As Metro Detroit is metropolitan region to Detroit called. It covers the southeast of the US -amerikanischen state of Michigan and, together with the eastern shore of the Detroit River past Canadian city of Windsor and its surrounding the joint international and vicinity Detroit-Windsor .
Metro Detroit is the second largest metropolitan area in the Great Lakes area after the Chicago metropolitan area .
The most important cities in the region besides Detroit are Dearborn , Livonia , Sterling Heights and Warren .
The segregation along racial groups is in the metro Detroit more than in any other metropolitan areas in the United States.

The Wayne , Oakland and Macomb Counties form the core of the metropolitan area . This region is also known colloquially as the Detroit Tri – County Area .
According to the Office of Management and Budget , the actual metropolitan area consists of the three counties of the Detroit Tri County Area , to which the Lapeer , Livingston and St. Clair Counties are added. Together these six counties form the Detroit – Warren – Livonia region , which is colloquially known as Metro Detroit .
The US Census Bureau combines a total of nine counties into a Combined Statistical Area (CSA) . This consists of the six counties of the Detroit – Warren – Livonia region , to which the Genesee , Monroe and Washtenaw Counties are added. All nine counties form the Detroit – Ann Arbor – Flint region . The Lenawee County , originally also belonged to this region is no longer to be counted since the year 2000.

Metro Detroit is bounded to the east by the Detroit River, which forms the border with the Canadian province of Ontario . There, the metropolitan area around the city of Windsor joins the Metro Detroit region. In 2006, the metropolitan area of Windsor had 323,342 residents.
The metropolitan region around the city of Toledo in neighboring Ohio is located southwest of Metro Detroit on the west bank of Lake Erie .
Metro Detroit radiates strongly into the surrounding area. This is relatively densely populated and around 46 million people are estimated to live within a radius of 300 miles (480 km) from Detroit. Metro Detroit is located in the center of the Great Lakes Megapolis , also known as Chipitts .
